ETH is one of the few I consider to diversify a bit, even tho I don't really like the current price, but I may enter if there is a 50 USD resistance and a dip.

Im just too lazy to learn how to store every altcoin. How does this thing work? I don't want to be holding it on Poloniex. Holding ETH is already a stress, holding it in an exchange is just nuts.

Do I need to download the entire blockchain, or can I relatively safe hold them with something else? (like Electrum for bitcoin)

chance you will not able to get etherium wallet to work, it's not possible if you're not tech savvy. web wallet could go offline anytime and disappeared. best option now is to store within exchange at this point.

@thejaytiesto, if you have a good pc and internet the whole syncronisation will take about 1hour. I store my key file in several places and the password hand written down and inside my mind, ofcourse.

Solution by the migthy york: buy ledger hardware wallet for 50$ and dump allyou ehter in it. 100% safe, offline, fast if you want to sell it again when bitcoin goes to the moon again and crushses the non believers for the 100th time. Always use hardware wallets

I have stored them in my ether address which i have created like this in my own computer.
https://github.com/kvhnuke/etherwallet
Quote
You can run MyEtherWallet.com on your computer instead of from the GitHub servers. You can generate a wallet completely offline and send transactions from the "Offline Transaction" page.

Go to https://github.com/kvhnuke/etherwallet/releases/latest.
Click on dist-vX.X.X.X.zip.
Move zip to an airgapped computer.
Unzip it and double-click index.html.
MyEtherWallet.com is now running entirely on your computer.

I have stored my encrypted json file in multiple places but i have chosen very strong password to encrypt them and not worried about it getting stolen by others because they can't decrypt it.

That strong password is in my mind which i will never forget and i have never used it in any other online services before.  Grin

store locally like you do with bitcoin, and never on any exchange, i like the hardware wallet suggestion but choose one that is not too costy, and very small so it don't attract any attention, and of course yes you need to download all blockchain, but if ethereum has prune you can do it once and remove the space not needed

You can store in any exchange but many people don't recommend to do that. You can download the wallet and store it in that or just use coinbase i don't know if they have that fees for eth but i can assure that you can trust them.

I've always used a large USB stick to store any altcoins (including ETH), but recently I've been worried if the chances that it's going to break down on me are great.

I have backups, but I'd like to minimise the risk either way.

Same with hardware wallets, what happens if those break?

I prefer to keep in micro sd, and save for the long term, it may also be traded offline, although it is complicated and time consuming. but I think it's safe.

I just downloaded this wallet the other day and I agree this is a very light wallet and also works as multi wallet,I've search for good and bad reviews and there's a lot of good reviews compare to bad ones and so I am now using this wallet.
