Just use Windows.  I tried and tried to get everything to work under Linux, I'm a two-decade Unix sysadmin, and I finally gave up and loaded up Windows.

I used GUI for about 3 months until I got my dedicated rig...CGMiner is so much better once you actually use it. I love it so much!

GUI Miner is just a front end that makes running other miners like CGMiner easier.  It also has built in configurations for many pools.  My new book actually covers both.  :-)  Should be out the end of this week or early next week.

Bitcoin Mining Step by Step.  Check out my blog (See signature) for more information about the book.  Follow me on Twitter, to find out when I release it.

I never tried GUIminer, I bought a dedicated PC with a good graphics card and installed xubuntu and started mining with CGminer.
I check up on it a few times a day and that's it. On the weekends I check the pool I'm connected it to. Works flawlessly!
