How come every new address I create is invalid? I've followed all the rules on the Wiki, at one point even going so far as copying and pasting the "valid" address on the page to see if it worked, and every time my Bitcoin wallet tells me the address is invalid.

You're going to have to do a better job of explaining what you are trying to do.  Typically you don't create a bitcoin address, your wallet creates valid addresses for you and tells you what they are.

Are you trying to create a paper wallet?

Are you trying to create a vanity address?

Are you trying to import a private key into your wallet?

What wallet program are you using (Armory, Bitcoin-Qt, Electrum, MultiBit, blockchain.info/wallet)?
