Recently, there have been a few media reports that bitcoin has been declared illegal by the Indian government.

Bitcoin is not illegal as per existing laws. As per media reports, a parliamentary committee is setup to look into the future legality of bitcoins and cryptocurrencies.

Pretty interesting concept but I don't think that this will do anything towards getting Bitcoin legalized. The customers that pay for goods and use Bitcoin while doing so don't really need to have a Government saying that Bitcoin is legal or not. Plus with the rates of most exchanges, it's pretty expensive to purchase Bitcoin.

Hopefully this works out, the Government aren't usually within the same side of the citizens opinion unless the higher-ups approve it. Since this involves money then it will remain a slippery subject when talked about in the courtroom.
If there is a bunch of people signing the petition and physically making a difference between fiat and Bitcoin without that much violence then Bitcoin does a chance of legality. Maybe there will be a person who has the connections for that to be possible.

What the Indian government is afraid of is not the use of bitcoin but the potential impact of bitcoin use against national security. Possibly they have not yet find ways to counter or to avoid the use of bitcoin in illegal ways. If they can find ways of regulating bitcoin so they will not be used illegally then possibly they will approve bitcoin after proper rules is made.

They can disallow any non-institutional selling or purchasing of bitcoin illegal.
If anyone want to use it,he be made to keep the records of buying, selling or even spending bitcoin than declaring it illegal.

Yo Zebpay, I signed the petition already. But I am still in confusion whether it will bring any change,
1. Bitcoin is already trending in India and RBI can't do anything in its use except giving warning, banning it or issuing punishment. So legality won't give it any other aspect.
2. On the same note, I don't think government even gonna ban it. Presently there is no country doing same and India is still far to be first

Anyone signing the petition runs the risk of the information being abused.

What if the Indian Govenment don't care about the petition, and want to seize all BTC in the Indian states? It only takes one leak of that information for all the people who give their information to a good cause for the whole thing to be turned into a bad cause.

"Be the change you want to see". Don't ask permission, no government can stop you using Bitcoin without destroying everyone's else's rights too.

We can try to do this one and and this is a small and easy thing to do to make a statement to the government. However, I don't think that the Indian goverment doesn't care about the petition. It will just add fuel to them to regulate the bitcoin is India. India is turning a blind eye on bitcoin, and will surely miss bitcoin in terms of online payment method.

I read that there is a virtual currency club or association in India which aim is to lobby government to recognize bitcoin trading? Any news about them?

You don't need officials to recognise facts for the facts to be true.

If Satoshi had asked permission, or for official recognition, before he programmed the original client, can you guess what would have happened? Seeking official recognition, or approval, goes against what Bitcoin is about, you have the wrong mindset, and Bitcoin therefore is not for you.

Bitcoin is valuable because it can't be controlled or regulated, if you pursue that line, you will not get what you're wanting anyway. Real Bitcoiners aren't going to be interested in the outcome, and you might just get official violence bursting through the door to your house. Have fun with that.

By the way, what sanctity does an online signature campaign have? How can you verify that the people signing are indeed Indians, and are not abusing the process  by signing multiple times?

As you said, it is declared only Indian reporter, not Indian Government announce that bitcoin is illegal, and also i have not listen anything this type of news. But i believe as you are doing something for bitcoin, it will work and hopefully Indian government not announce about bitcoin illegal. Its a good move in the right direction only if we have a listening government all over the world but where there would be issue is if the number of people that will sign the petition will really be enough to move the hands of government. Either way, when it comes to goverrnment, any fact finding committee will still come back with recommendations which most times its always negative because of the control government will not be able to  have...
