Hi,

For an instance, if I deposit USD in btc-e.com, can I use it to sell LTC/BTC/any other virtual currency, or must I first actually buy the same amount of required virtual currency, before selling it?

Thanks.

As far as I know none of the major exchanges allow short selling. It is a pretty big gap, which hopefully someone will fill soon.

In an interview posted today, the CEO(?) of Mt. Gox says there's a regulatory hurdle to short-selling:

If I understood him, they have to declare the subject of the short-selling to be a tangible asset, which he thinks BTC doesn't fall into.

Bitfinex allows short-selling, but their market depth is not very good compared to the large exchanges.

Interesting, and as I suspected.

Thanks for the confirmation and the link.
