I don't get this, how do you defend something decentralised?
The network is basically multiple copies of itself being run on multiple machines throughout the world. You can hack one machine, but the rest of the machines carry on as normal and they will not bring down the network. Hacking one machine does nothing to the network itself either, since multiple components that exist in many copies of each other are propagating the rest of the network.

this is such an interesting topic. i too is now stating to wonder how bitcoin is being protected even though we say that the technology are so innovated this time and may bring someone a good security..
youtube is your friend It's better to have this kind of conversation here also, this attracts new followers to this forum because of different perspective and arguments compare to youtube where you only get one side of the story and those people on youtube just want to hype their videos because they are making money out of their videos.

Yeah, but encryption is there to get broken. What happens if (and when) it does?
encryption currently can not be broken, and you don't defend bitcoin as a whole, everyone defend himself/herself from the hacker, as a "pillar" of bitcoin, nodes are that after all the beauty fo this is that it's virtually indestructible, because unless you take down all the nodes, you can't take down bitcoin, and enw node can always emerge quickly

The very fact that Bitcoin is decentralized prevents it from hacking. If one node gets hacked, there will always be other nodes which haven't been hacked. Decentralization is considered an effective way to add security, prevent failures and provide efficiency to networks.

Yes, it is proven. Though some wallets have been hacked way back in previous years, they have develop their security against the hackers. It's design to be used anonnymously and secured so that it can last for a long period of time.

Bitcoin is not totally able for hacking, I trust the high security of it. It may hack some part of it but not the whole system of it. The networks are spread globally so it is impossible to make bitcoin destroy, not at all. It will remain working and active as long as there are users.

What sort of silly question is this? It is the responsibility of the user to securely store his coins. Let me ask you a counter question. Suppose you are having $10,000 in physical cash with you. Whose responsibility is it, to defend it from the robbers and thieves?

He probably thought about hacker attacks on the whole Bitcoin network. I suppose. But of course that every Bitcoin users is respnsible for his coins only himself, no one else. Maybe such easy security breaches are happening because people think that someone else will protect their Bitcoins and bring them back if they were stolen.

Mate, bitcoin is so hard to hack unlike other currency around the globe. Actually it is the most protected because even the government cannot have the access for that, unless its developer make it down and security will be bold on to public.

the bitcoin wallets has the world's best security and i can say this because i am a developer, you can even ask hackers or other developers but the methods used in bitcoin wallets are really intelligent. they have a open system but still the private and public key concept gets it all, after that they have the best encryption so even if someone really tries to bruteforse(crack) the password then it can take them about 3years to crack just single bitcoin address or even more. just remember more miners means more secure network

. The one who will defend our wallet since it is decentralized is of course the owner of the wallet. But if you somehow use a hosted web wallet the responsibility of protecting your wallet from hackers is the host site. But even big web wallet hosts are also target of hacking such as the incident a year ago when bitfinex was hacked and a large amount of bitcoins was stolen

Developers can't do anything. Everyone using Bitcoin is trusting the network rules and it is known. If they want to change a rule, those that will agree with it will form another separate chain.
If you want to change anything in the blockchain, you have to ensure that everyone else will believe it. For it to happen, you need the other nodes to believe you. They will follow their own set of rules. If you try to defy them, they won't trust you and nothing will happen. Bitcoin is backed by math, SHA256 is hard to break and thats why there is a mining reward.

Decentralization just means that the data is not stored in one server/database or location. Imagine a bank storing copies of the same information on computers or servers in all their branches and not just in a data warehouse in a single location. A hacker will have to change the data on all of those computers to successfully change it or to steal it. The Blockchain is just one HUGE ledger system that are stored on 1000's of computers or nodes.

yes that is very right i think it is not so easy to hack bitcoin, although we have some bad experience in past but still i will like to say that the security of bitcoin wallets and exchanges are increasing from time to time.

The Blockchain is just one HUGE ledger system that are stored on 1000's of computers or nodes. Decentralization has nothing to do with the bitcoin getting hacked, bitcoin like any other system in the world has blind spots and can be hacked, and even Satoshi himself said this when he created it, as bitcoin becomes more popular and more expensive and its becoming a threat to the government control over the currencies. There is no doubt that some of them are already trying to figure it out, but I think hackers even if they know how to hack it they won’t because they use bitcoin as a cover to do their illegal actions and get away with it. Even if hackers want to hack bitcoin they won’t target the whole bitcoin network they will go for the major providers like an online wallet for example.

Technology protects us and technology can be decentralized if there are people able to do it. But to make it work well and defend us, it must be improved always, because the hackers are improving their technology and trying to find gaps to attack us and steal money. If Bitcoin technology continues as it's now for much time yet, we will be unsafe and vulnerable for attacks.
I think if bitcoin will be decentralized hacking system will be unlikely to happen. Because as you say technology can protect as so it can protect i self as well. Not just on hackers or program through stealing in transaction but for more specific threat. Bitcoin community know the impact of support and community on bitcoin value so i guess that people who support bitcoin will stop on doing particular things like hacking because if the bitcoin will be gone there will be know value on transaction someday.
