Are the ripples given away to bitcoiners the only ones currently in circulation? Is anyone doing anything with them or are they just sitting on them like a lottery ticket?

Ripples are a disgusting scam with a central server/corporation holding all the cards, absolutely do not support ripples. In my opinion.

Has anyone actually used the system yet? I'm still waiting on the mailing list but I was wondering if it's been opened up to a limited set of people for actual use, was wondering if there is any kind of review from anyone.

If it's run anything like the mess at MtGox that he left behind, I don't think that it will last very long.

If I understand the concept correctly, it's basically just going to be another exchange.  If you just use them to move your cryptocoins to traditional money and back, what's the harm there?

If they ever open source it, I'll take a look - but I don't think that'll happen anytime soon.

My interest in Ripples brought me here.  Anyone know when they are going to open it up to other currency?

I'm pretty much just leaving this comment so that I can hit my 5 quota, get out of the newbie pen, and claim my ripples in that "free ripples" thread Smiley

I know it operates differently than bitcoin, but I frankly don't understand why people are so opposed to it on principle. So what if a company seeds the network and makes some money. How if that any different ethically from someone making money off an exchange like mtgox? If anything, it should be seen as better, since there's still a finite supply of ripples (if I understand correctly), and so eventually they will all just be released into the system and the company will only benefit from running the service itself...

Oh man, I really need to comb over their wiki. I'm way too ignorant of how it works on the technical end of things :/

well since i commented i should say something halfway useful

Ripples sounds like a great idea.  The feudal trust metric thing sounds like it would work if implemeted correctly.  Also it sounds like something that the current financial infrastructure would be more likely to get behind than something like bitcoin.  They would feel more in control, while keeping the network somewhat decentralized.  But I think a poor implementation could become unbalanced fairly easily and i dont have much faith in ripples given what little i've heard.

The centralized system with oversight/security left to that one group of developers worries me...

Well I've set up my Ripple wallet - but no idea how to get some ripples to get started. Had a look at the sub-reddit on ripples, but it just pointed to this forum for giveaways.

Anyone got any ideas on how t get some?

You want ripples, go to the Ripple.com/forum and post your wallet number. Someone will send you what you need to get started, or you buy them off of someone using the forum, lots of sellers.
