Is there a live graph of the difficulty curve somewhere? I can see instantaneous values on a lot of markets but I'd like to see a trend graph. Also, I don't fully understand why the value goes up and down. Any resources to better understand this aspect of bitcoins?

The block chain is the main innovation of Bitcoin. It is the first distributed timestamping system.
