Bitcoin Core can take quite awhile to sync but I doubt it would take a year. It does need to download several hundred GB worth of data though as it downloads the entire blockchain.

I use Electrum wallet instead as it is a lightweight wallet and doesn't take nearly as long to sync and requires a lot less disk space. I'd recommend you take a look at it in the future.

It might be possible to spend the coins without being fully synced, but not sure. You could also likely export the private key of the address you sent to another wallet such as Electrum which would allow you to spend them sooner since Electrum should sync in less time.

That means you need to unlock the wallet with your encryption password first.

Use
Code:
walletpassphrase "your walletpassphrase here" 600
to unlock your wallet for 600 seconds and then dump the key.
