Has anyone had to regenerate their electrum wallet? How does it work?

I have the seed code saved in a safe place, and thankfully haven't had to use it yet, but I'm curious about the process in advance.  Do you regenerate the wallet with the seed code and then request all your addresses one at a time until you have your funds back?  How does it know which addresses are yours, and when to stop regenerating them?
