I think the blockchain would be suitable for such an app. Steemit and Qora have shown that a decentralized blog system works well with the blockchain. So why not a decentralized messaging app, too.

It's a good idea.
I have not encountered similar projects on the blockchain.

I think that social-networks are not popular right now, I mean too little chances to gain popularity with "twitter-like" app

There is no such application
I think the blockchain would be suitable for such an app. Steemit and Qora have shown that a decentralized blog system works well with the blockchain. So why not a decentralized messaging app, too.
But can I ask you about where are the advantages of using the blockchain for the social media?
I was learning a lot from the matchpool project. Matchpool is similar to the tinder, but with lack of the advantages of his economic aspect by using the blockchain itself. If the tinder will allow the users with a single click and they can subscribe every block or channel for free, but on the matchpool project caused by the blockchain and it will divide every room, and the users must do a manual subscription to the room and users must pay more money.

Can you?

Not yet, I knwo Ashaka team is working on a social platform app  but I have not seen their testnet yet

At Status we're building a fully decentralized blockchain based messenger app. It's not really Twitter, but more like WeChat, or Telegram with DApps and transactions/Wallet.

Quote
Status is a free (libre) and open source mobile client targeting Android & iOS built, entirely on Ethereum technologies.

Thanks to the new protocols Ethereum has introduced, there's a whole new ecosystem of applications being developed that are completely decentralised (also known as DApps), and Status aims to provide a user interface to access them. These decentralized applications remove the need for middlemen and centralised servers, providing a clear path forward towards an internet where users get to own their own data, and an economy built on permissionless, open protocols.

It is our belief that messengers are evolving into a new type of OS, and are becoming gateways to our economies and social lives. Status uses messaging as a platform, and by combining both a messenger and a browser we are building a gateway for everyday smartphone users to begin using DApps, and a simple way for DApp developers to reach new users.

Status runs go-ethereum directly from your mobile device, providing a mobile Ethereum node in your pocket!

wow,
but one more messenger isn't it too much of them already?
how about integration of transactions in existent messengers?

I don't know of any other decentralized messenger apps, if you do, please do provide some links Smiley

Integration with existing ones would not serve any purpose, they are centralized as heck being ran by the biggest and some of the most intrusive companies.

Yes, there is:

twister
Peer-to-peer microblogging

twister is the fully decentralized P2P microblogging platform leveraging from the free software implementations of Bitcoin and BitTorrent protocols.

It's a good idea and will work. Blockchain technology has many great ways to be out to use and using it for Twitter likes will work well. Will it then generate coins for each tweet and basically monotomize your likes.

Several blockchains have messaging functionality, a Twitter-like platform would be a pretty easy step from there, especially for Ethereum. The only potential problem would be the need to pay gas to tweet, which, I highly doubt anyone would be willing to do that. But judging from the (relative) success of Twitter itself, I have to imagine someone will soon try to imitate it in the blockchain space.

That's why Ethereum has the Whisper protocol, so messaging doesn't cost but can be used in tandem with the blockchain.

I have seen gas and know it's used in the eth wallet to send but what exactly is it and what does it mean ?
Do you maybe have some links to help me out or maybe you can answer yourself ?

There may be ico that apparently built twitter in blockchain, this is the same as one ico that issued tokens for instagram, social media based on blockchain. Maybe this will be the work of the programing. If cryptocurrency is accepted publicly, and blockchain is considered appropriate, it is also possible dev.twitter will implement blockchain on twitter.

It is trivial to code on the NXT blockchain for any half decent developer. Problem is NXT hasn't seen a lot of use so nobody bothered to do it or somebody did a concept app in the past and didn't follow through for lack of interest from users. Fees to send messages can be another deterrent, but censorship-free twitter can't be completely free of charge I would guess.

Thanks, this is actually exactly what I searched for. I read through the project. Unfortunately there are no explanations about how the project will prevent to post and share illegal stuff. They promote the product as decentralized and censor-free but not what that strategies are to avoid criminal unethical content.

They promote the product as decentralized and censor-free but not what that strategies are to avoid criminal unethical content.

Hopefully they won't censor or remove any posts. I am sick and tired of all these "decentralized" projects implementing censorship/moderator oracles. It is not a decentralized market if someone(s) have control over what is bought and sold. Likewise, it is not decentralized social media if someone(s) can censor posts.

Was everyone's balls snipped at birth by their government overlords? Cryptocurrencies should be utilized to avoid government intervention and censorship. If cryptocurrencies settle for anything less than that, then they are ultimately a waste of money, time, and effort. Go use a centralized service like Twitter if that's what you're after.
