Building new rig FIRST TIME

Hey friends!

I'm starting to plan my first Ethereum Rig and already did a lot of research because its of course a relative big investment for a student.

Well my first question would be, if you think that my rig, that I selected, would be working/needs some changes. Since many of you have much more knowledge about this topic then I have, I would really appreciate some tips or suggestions :smile:

This would be my rig:

Some Y-Molex 3 pin to get some of the fans together because the Motherboard doesnt have enough connections, as far as I can tell

My second question would be Profit/Money:

At the moment, since I already have a SSD, this setup would cost be around 2150 €/ $2300 . I used the site www.whattomine.com to calculate my theoretical earnings. The default setting for 6x RX 480 was 174 Mh/s so I just took this. Also to mention is that I have the possibility to bring my rig into a server cabinet with 15° C / 59 ° F and I dont need to pay any money for power so actually its just the hardware cost. With this settings I got a annual profit of $2,466.60 .

How realistic is this? I know that difficulty will get higher, but when the difficulty doubles, wont be the price double too? Well of course not 1:1, but at least go up?

Your setup looks all good to me, although personally i would wait abit for the rx 5xx series to be released or maybe even the vegas.

If you dont want to go thru the hassle of building your own mining frame i can recommend werewolfpats crypto monster instead of the mining rig that u were looking at.

not only is he cheaper but superb quality and really nice thought through case design i would say.

I would suggest you slowly add the cards. Until and unless you are getting a great deal for buying in bulk, don't invest all money at once.

You can also check the Marketplace forum, there are a lot of deals that might interest you.

1300 evga is enough for regular rig for eth and zec mining, 99% sure that it is also enough for eth+dcr.

i usually put one card directly in the mobo (16X slot), you can do it on H97 anniversary, not sure on H81. this should be the card you attach the monitor to.

consider using linux-much less hassle with forced restarts/updates, etc.
on the downside, win has more/easier tweaking features.

I know prices are higher in the EU for computer hardware, but that seems a little high. Where are you buying your hardware from? I recently put together a 6x RX 470 4GB rig for $1200 after rebates and all I had to start with was a SSD.

I think the default numbers on whattomine include flashing the bios, which I wouldn't try doing if this is your first experience mining.

Sorry, but I dont agree with this.  If the OP has the money to buy now, then holding off on getting all 6 GPUs to start is essentially just throwing money (mining rewards) away.  Now granted, at present time, prices for most 470 & 480s are higher than they have been in a long time due to product shortages likely caused by the recent spike in alt prices.  So, that would be one consideration.  In addition, you might want to consider the MSI 470 4GB.  These are usually much cheaper than the 480 8gb, but the overall performance is not very much lower with those 470s, which means they should ROI quite a bit faster.  For your PSU, 1300W will work well for 6x470's running ETH + DCR but I think 480s will draw more power, so you might want to be careful there.

I'm also finding some RX470 4GB MSI GPU cards to set up a mini rig and it's running more quiet than other rigs and less electricity?
I see that many people are choosing RX 580 GPU instead . what is the difference between RX480 8G and RX580 8GB ?

wait for the 580 and 570 april 11th , they seem to be around 10% faster than the 480s on the 580 side and the 570 is on par with a 480 and both the 500 series are supposed to use less power

The reason I ask him to get in slow is because, new cards are just about to come in, so he can buy those better/more efficient cards and a lot of miners will be shedding out their old 4xx series, so he can maybe land a good deal and get 9-10 cards for the same budget !

Sapphire Nitro and MSI Gaming are both fine choices.

As for the MSI Z97 Gaming 5, it's only worth to purchase if the price is similar to H81 or if you want a 7 GPU rig, if not, go H81.

CPU : I don't see the point of buying a pentium over the celeron. G1840 will do fine.

I pretty much agree with the rest :p

As for the difference between rx400 series and rx500, i'm not so sure that it will be easy to flash the BIOS of the latter, as you will have to use the newest drivers, go for the rx400 series. They are the most widely used GPU so everything is well documented and you will be able to tweak them quite easily.

Thank you for your advice. I still wait for new card released and i will buy those cards. I like this new card because of less electricity and 10% faster.
I hope I can buy 12 cards to set up 2 mini  rigs for mining.
