you can't really define any particular amount of time when it comes to invest in altcoins.
with bitcoin it is different, it is being adopted for real, so that makes it a good investment any time you get in no matter the price. because it will be higher in a couple of months after your investment, no matter what.

with altcoins however things are very different. because first of all they have no real usage and adoption other than some traders investing and some fools falling for the hype.
and secondly altcoins are highly manipulated, specially those with a small orderbook size and those with huge premine, ICO,...

with that said the length of an investment in an altcoin can be from a couple of minutes to a month in my opinion.
and i have done all of them.
i see altcoins as a way of making more bitcoin, and because of that way of thinking i never hold any of them for long term. this means sometimes i get in right as the pump is starting and get out after i get even a small profit like even 5% and sometimes (depending on the coin that is being pumped) i wait longer up to 60%-80% profit and get out.

It all depends there's a short and long term investment,if you are investing in an ico coins it will need some weeks or months before you made a profit provided that the price of the coin that you have invested commands a high price than the price you have invested .

it depend by many factorr some coins can be hold for a long time if you see the dev active and proposing new idea, other coins better to hold them for few weeks or one month and dump if nothing change, because i don't want to be a bagholder of shit coins, in the last category we have those coins that die quickly and is better to dump when they hit an exchange, it's a very risky and gamble world this one of crypto

Obviously yes it will depend on a specific coin as some coin are come and go. Also we know the fact that new coins especially on ICO are being manipulated as there are lots of big hoarders.

If it bothers you to choose what altcoin will be meant for long term or short term, you must to do it manually and step by step. After some researched of yours and putting some money on alts, never goes on just holding and try to study all the trend that will happened so that you can able to increase your chances of winning once you deal on trades.

Some of the famous Altcoin is still alive and good for long term investment like ethereum,dash,litecoin and many more.

I prefer not to hold them long term, I tried it and found it less profitable than day trading them. Instead I watch them long term and profit off intermittent periods of hype.
You're less likely to become a bagholder this way.
Unless something comes along that I actually have a use for I will continue to accumulate more Bitcoin in this method.

Yeah , and the main thing is that at which price you bought the altcoins or any coin and in how much amount .
Here it is a big matter that if you bought less famouse altcoin then probably you will need to more time to hold it because such types of the altcoins needed more time to increase the price .
So all depends upon your selection .
Here I will suggest you to buy any altcoin , but see the history of the altcoin through the graph that whether the price of that altcoin is at low price or it is at big , if the price for the altcoin ,that you want to buy is more than the normal basic , then don't buy Because it will.take more time to give profit .

i don't have a fixed amount of time but it usually won't surpass 1 week.

obviously yes.
it depends on both the coin and how much profit i know that coin can potentially give me. some coins can go very high while others can't or at least have a very low chance of doing so.
and also it is always a matter of time. about when i find out about that coin and when can it buy it. if it is before the pump starts then obviously i will keep it longer to the very top. but if i get in late i will obviously dump it faster too.

Ofcourse all depends upon us that which altcoin we choose to invest , that means depends upon the coin .
Here you can take example of big famous altcoins or coins like BTC , dash , monero ,.edr , Putin ( now at down) , dgb these are such altcoins which are profitable after long time otherwise Investment .
opposite of these altcoins there some altcoins which are not famous , will give Profit in any time may be in two to one week or may be in two to three months , that is really a good thing for us we can make more profit with the less.famouse altcoins then what we can make with the more famouse altcoin like BTC or dash .

sometimes the accumulation phase before the pumps takes time and you never know when the pump is actually going to take place. all you can see is the accumulation phase and the increased volume. and then you will end up keeping some bitcoins in an altcoin idle for some time.

this period can be long, my experience has been 1 month tops to keep an altcoin before it is pumped so i can dump it but usually it is much shorter than that.
