We don't have to follow tradition, but usually our parents and grandparents insist on it. They want to leave part of their social behavior and their customs to us before they die. Also older people, who spent their lives following tradition will protect it, because without it they'd feel like their lives were wasted. It's your life, if you don't want to do something, you don't have to.
My parents are religious and I'm not, so they always feel like I'm misbehaving and defying them by not following their religious customs, but they'll have to get over it.

I do not think that we need to follow the traditions because it will be different from our time now. It doesn't hurt to follow or believe in those kind of things but still, you believe what you want to.

In our culture, it still important to follow our OLD traditions and Customs and I'm still following it up to this day. Because this tradition has help us shape our characters and our attitudes. Others would argue that old ways hinders progress, but how can we move forward it we don't look at the past? It seems to me that most traditions a relic of the past. Many of these traditions are associated with religion. The less faithful, the less will be old and useless traditions. It is impossible to move forward constantly looking back.

A tradition is not only religious, it can be something as ordinary as a traditional cake your mom used to make. The Scotts wear traditional Kilts, in Germany there's traditional Oktoberfest with girls serving beer in traditional Bavarian dresses. In the USA you have Halloween, Thanksgiving and many other traditional days of celebration and customs. Some are relics that we could forget about, but many are an important part of our culture.

You are both right and wrong. Respecting your elders is indeed a custom and like all good and useful customs it is actually based in biology and evolution. Whole is always stronger than mere sum of parts. Child is legacy of its parents and parents are for the most of their life pillar that morally and materially support their child. Hand in hand this leads to procreation of life and evolution.
