Could thus be the spark bitcoin needs to reach a greater level of acceptance?  Is a bitcoin merchant required to collect tax, if his merchandice is not sold for USD?  Or if so, is there any reason he couldn't declare the USD value of his items being 10% of the bitcoin value and only charge a small fraction of the tax?

I was speculating that maybe more people would be pushed to bitcoin as an easy way to dodge this new mandatory tax. 

You don't think so?  Even if it's just a small percentage of shoppers, if a few people switch it'll make an impact.

You still owe sales tax even if you pay in bitcoin. No business is going to be getting away with acceptinb bitcoins and not paying taxes.
