On April 11, the U.S. state of Ohio Inspector General’s Office released a report about five prisoners accused of building two personal computers (PC) from spare parts within the prison. The inmates used the makeshift computers to access Tor, obtain credit cards, apply for bank accounts, and create bitcoin wallets as well.

Five inmates from the Marion Correctional Institution in Ohio built two computers from recycled computer parts and hid them in the prison ceiling. The jerry-rigged PCs were used for various cyber activities for well over two years within the prison facility. The Inspector General was notified of the incident when the prison’s IT team noticed peculiar activity while testing the facility’s server.

"Findings include bitcoin wallets, stripe accounts, bank accounts, and credit card accounts point toward possible identity fraud, along with other possible cyber-crimes."

I just laughed when I read the story. This inmates might be using concoins as mode of payment outside  Cheesy. Just imagine if this inmate used their brain to stay away from life of a criminals. Those guys should be CEO by now. Grin. Just how they do that amazes me. Indeed bitcoin really reaches far now even in the prison cell.  Grin

That is just lapses on the security protocol.  Remember it takes them two years to know that there is someone hacked their server.  Those 5 guys are really talented. Though it is the poor security implementation that let them hack the server and transact online.  I guess jail warden have something to do with that event too and should be investigated.

Those 5 dudes are smart to figure how to exploit the prison server to their advantage. But one thing I noticed is this:

"Findings include bitcoin wallets,.....

I hope this is not another way to put bitcoin and criminality all together again. It only mentioned that they can find bitcoin wallets. it did not say they used to received and send for illegal activities. Because if they did, bitcoin will be put in another bad spot again. I guess we need to wait for a follow up news to really see if indeed bitcoin has been used for such condition.

And this is noteworthy to bitcoin why? They used bitcoin wallets…so? Anything to connect bitcoin to criminal activity I suppose. Yet another desperate attempt of a bankrupt police state to besmirch a thing they know nothing about and feel threatened by.
