I got enough litecoin to dump on a 7950 this will jump my hash rate from 871khash/s to 1471-1521khash/s, or should I hold my ltc?

Seriously.
What do you guys think? Hold or dump?

I think LTC mining is going to be extremely profitable. I'd buy a card, but I'd go for the 7970.

Yeah but holding litecoin is also likely to be very profitable - that is a large part of why mining it is likely to be.

If possible I'd hold the litecoin and dump some scamcoin or other for cash to buy a card.

Or fiat, of course. Dump fiat first. Smiley

Yeah if you can buy one with fiat, do that.

If you sell and Gox accepts LTC the next day and they go up and never return you will not be very happy. Also if the price jumps up the difficulty will jump too, making the card a little more worthless.

Don't listen to this guy, 7950 all the way.  I'll lay it out for you and show why serious miners do 7950.

7970 gets 750 according to crypto. Most people get less however.

7950 gets 650 though most get less.

Both can get the high numbers with much testing and work.

Based off of top end numbers:

7970 = $400 = 1.875 h/s/$
7950 = $290 = 2.24 h/s/$

Yup, I wasn't gonna get a 7970. Sounds like I should hold, as explained if gox accepts litecoin +with diff. to go up with price, that seems to be the best logical thinking.

Thanks, I will hold.

because even if LTC goes up - mining dif won't immediately rise to levels of non-profitable mining. Therefore you have a card you can sell later if coins crash and you can use it as ammunition to mine any other coins that are up-and-coming. Cryptocurrency is young, it will flourish.

pekv2: Hold your litecoins. MtGox just announced they will start accepting them. Be weary of people giving you advice to buy and sell on the forums in *any* digital currency where doing so will affect the price as it aids in their manipulation attempts.

per card, yes, but you get something like 3h/$ if you buy a 5830, would you be buying a 5830? no because there's only so many you can fit on a rig, before you have to buy another set of mobo/ram/cpu etc.. The card that give bigger hash per PCIE slot does have its advantages, especially if space is of concern.

K, I will take this advice and hold. Cuz like you and some others stated, if/when gox accepts, it's gonna jump the price, by then I might be able to buy two 6950's.

I'll take the risk and hold for sure. Seems like buying hardware right now would be much more riskier than to hold.

Buy the card with fiat IMO. Then you keep your coins and get the card...which gets you more coins.

Plus you can pump your favorite scamcoin more effectively too  Grin

OP, remember the card will still be worth $200 at least.. a few months from now. so you are not investing $300 per say.. but only really spending $100 to use the card for a few months to mine:)

It's only an endless debate if people want to go with unrealistic numbers and try to justify their buyer's remorse.

Gigabyte 7950s will get 600kh/s minimum. All of mine (12) get over 650kh/s. Most get just under 700kh/s. Mind you, this is with extremely basic overclocking - no fine tweaking whatsoever. Other brands of 7950s will easily hit 600kh/s with basic core overclocking.

Most people with 7970s can't even hit 600kh/s. 700kh/s+ is extremely rare. A friend has 3 of them and they are all poor performers compared to his 7950s, and nearly every post out there has the same results.

For the price of three 7970s, you can buy four 7950s - even if you get those 7970s on sale. Think about that. The math is extremely simple. Your six card 7970 rig is extremely shit value compared to the six card 7950 rig. This is before we even go into the extra costs of powering -and having the hardware to power- the 7970s that use more wattage compared to the 7950s. Even when overclocked the 7950s will use less wattage than the stock 7970s.

Debate over.

Up front this is correct - but one thing you may want to think about is the difference in resale value.  I think we can all agree GPU mining is seeing its final days in the coming months.  So your resale market is down to gamers.  Most gamers who buy used equipment are looking for the best card available at the time.  (7970/7990)
