Hello,

Just got into bitcoin mining a couple months ago, playing around with it a little bit, but nothing too serious.

I am looking for a way to run a miner as a service. My nephew is wanting me to build him a new PC and says if I buy him a card to put in it, I can mine from it while he is not using it, since he only games a couple hours a night. Now, I admire his spirit in getting a good video card without saving the money for it, plus it gives me a chance to increase my hashrate, but I wonder if it is possible to have something run as a service in the background, even if he isn't logged in.

Anyone know of a way to do this? He would be running Windows 7 or 8.

It should be possible, there are crackers making millions of benefit using their zombie networks without being noticed.

maybe try with 1 core enabled in GPUminer.

I'd just install gpuminer, although it's not a "service", you can have it auto-start mining on bootup. Using the -f option, you can even have it mine while he's playing games with minimal impact to his gaming (although mining is pretty slow).

I currently use -f90 which works great. If he complains about it slowing down his gaming too much, just increase the -f90 to 100, 110, 120, or whaterver.

This has the benefit of once it's setup, it's automagic and nothing for him to fiddle with.

Do you mean GuiMiner? I can't find a GPUMiner program to download.
