I also had the same thought. I think there has been an agreement between Real Madrid and Mbappe and it is very likely that Mbappe will join Real Madrid as a free agent. When Benzema decided to leave Real Madrid, I thought that Real Madrid would look for a replacement for him, but what happened is that Real Madrid did not seem to make it an urgent matter and left Benzema's position empty. I don't understand this news at all, How can a player having full game time leave a big club like Bayern Munich for Real Madrid? I know Real Madrid is a big club, but they have players playing same role as Jamal Musiala.
