Old Computer Modification for Mining

Hello all,

I would like to start a short my btc summary:)

My friend introduced me with btc and poloniex 2 weeks ago. And after I could not sleep during 2 weeks. I made several panic buy/sell operations. As a result I learned "patience is important"

But I really deep interested with gpu mining. I would like to set up a rig and start mininig. But rig cost is huge for me and for this I would like to learn modification posibility my old computer. I need some advice. Mother board is ok? Which graphic card/cards suitable for my mother board? How many card can I put? Ram and PSU..

No need big profit with first system. I would like to learn softwares and gain some experience.

If you have a software advice for mining, I may be happy:)

Are you planning to mine bitcoin? If yes, then its not possible to do it with GPU's and you would really need asic miners in able to do so and cost of those miners arent cheap at all therefore you will go to mine altcoin which also an alternative because you can anytime convert it to bitcoin but i would say regarding to your computer specs it wont able to do so and its better to save up to buy a good video card and you should not expect too much on profits because profits would depend on how much hashes you do have on mining altcoins.

For testing i would buy amd 7950/280, they are cheap and ROI quite fast when mining ZEC.

And you don't need big psu for one card, 500 Watt is more than enought.

I am planing to mine altcoins and my priorty is learning "how can I mine?" I would like to learn software phase. After this phase I set up new rig. Do you have any advice for software to mine altcoin? Thanks.

Just type 7950 and you will see it first thing in any search engine.

your vista needs to be 64 bit.

drop the hd4650, its useless for gpu mining alts. grab a rx470 or something.

other than that the rest will work. hope your psu is a decent brand 500 watts or so (for a mining single card). you could mine (say) eth with a setup like that.

Your pc is old to mine you will just change everything to even start learning , you can just build a 1gpu rig won't cost you much and gain some experience after you can just upgrade that rig to actually get in the game and gain some profit , what you are trying to do is a waste of time and money don't buy those HDs, just buy a used rx470 or 480

With good luck you can find used motherboard (775) with four PCI-e slot for free and use your cpu and mem.

Ask from your friends if they have old computers to giveaway...


I would also upgrade to windows 7 Pro (x64)

But everything depends on your budjet.

For 60$ you can get 7950 or 280,

For 100$, maybe 290.

And for 160$ you get 470.

no its not. its cpu, ram, hd and mobo are fine (mobo has an x16 pcie slot). just needs to make sure vista is 64 bit (there are no 32 bit gpu miners that i know of) and add a recent video card. as long as his psu is a decent 500 watts or so he is good to go for a starter single card gpu alt coin miner.

i have mined on a lga 775 e7400 rig with 4 gb and vista 64, it was an old cast off dell office machine i got for free. in other words, a junker. ran fine with 2 cards, one in the pcie16 slot, one on a riser in the x1 slot. just had to replace the psu with a seasonic 750 psu.

Don't forget that a percentage of the gpu power is drawn through the pcie lan , this old mobo may not handle such a hungry old HDs or R9s , so why should he risk when he is going anyway to build a rig so a new mobo and psu won't hurt , he can upgrade later for more gpus with raisers , thats my opinion a new mobo and psu won't cost him much and he can mine with a used rx or so...

price 120$ - roi 120 -150 days , depends on energycosts...
