Who is Satoshi, and why would he create a currency, want to stay anonymous, and then run away?

He wouldn't gain anything from coming out, I'm sure he has mined enough coins from the start to be comfortable, no need for him to come out.

Obviously he is a genius!! Can you imagine what his life would be like if he revealed himself? Also, I think his anonymity is helpful in a way. If people knew him they might discredit BTC even more.
I have heard theories that he is not a single person but a group of entities. I would think that if it was a group someone would talk at some point though. Human nature has a really hard time keeping things like that quiet. One person tells his friend, and then they tell their friends and so on.
I have my thoughts. If bitcoin becomes so mainstream and ends up becoming the currency everyone in the world uses, there may come a day that he will need to come out of hiding to "help" the world. He would be the most powerful person in the world at that point! Would he use his power for good or not? That is the question? Or he may always stay anonymous and I might just be imagining too much.

Considering what happens to nations who fight back against USD hegemony (remember what happened to Libya and Iraq when they decided to stop selling oil for USD?), it would make a lot of sense for Satoshi to remain anonymous - else he might not survive long enough to enjoy his wealth.

He is no doubt a genius. Like many superheros they did not like to reveal themeselves.

Well google e-gold look what happened to that guy. Why make yourself a target - be anonymous just in case. If it becomes really popular he can prove who he is by spending the first coin.

But seriously: Whoever he/she/they are, the most likely scenario is that they had the idea (the crypto-idea itself wasn't new, but the implementation was innovative), realized "wow, this shit is gonna be huge!", then made it happen, keeping a lot of coins themselves as a retirement fund. It's a pretty good business model really.

Shame it only works for one person, once!
