Say I want to wire $20,000, what is the point of using a third party like dwolla when I still need to get verification with Mtgox and can wire money direct to Mtgox. Seems like Dwolla, Aurumxchange and others are redundant in this scenario.

Am I missing something?

Dwolla is cheaper, especially for amounts smaller than yours.

They are, if you're wiring that much money.  Dwolla is the cheapest way I know of for smaller amounts.

Cheaper, and you don't need to do a wire, which I don't trust and would require I get off my lazy ass and interact with tellers at the B&M bank/CU.

Yeah, 25c for Dwolla vs. 25$++ for wire transfer. Seems like a no brainer other than the extra 4+ days to get money into Dwolla...

I'm in Australia and looking at a $20K transfer. Can I send money to Dwolla without incurring a fee? i.e. do they have local facility?

Should just be 25 cents.  Think they're USA only though?

I guess its simpler for a newbie with a larger fund to pay the $20 wire cost (cost of 2 beers in Aus) and then buy bitcoins on mtgox in AUd and sell them in USD to get into the liquidity of the USD/bitcoin market.
