Hey,

I am a programmer, and I finally got some spare time. I would like to build something open source to help boost my resume but I have no idea what to build. I was thinking about a wallet or a blockchain explorer, but those are very complex and will take too much time. There are also many wallets and explorers out there so there would be no point in making another one.

Thanks.

You can contribute to existing open source projects. Find bugs or look at what people are reporting as issues and then fix those and submit pull requests.

TBH, I dont know any interesting projects I can work on. Most of them are way too complex for me.

They may be complex, but you don't necessarily have to work on the complex stuff. There are always simple things and small changes that can be made in every project. Not all parts of the project are linked to other parts so you don't need to understand everything.

There are Bitcoin projects in nearly all popular programming languages. Just search around and I'm sure that you will find one that has simple enough issues that you can fix to get your foot in the door.

Completely agree on what achow said theres no really need to know the whole system since there are components or parts which you can surely understand. If you found out that most of them are too complex for you then I would suggest to study gradually further so that your skills would expand it make some time but it would really be worth it when you are already haunting for jobs or projects.

The only project I found interesting was BitcoinJS, however all of the issues seem to be very complex. I believe working on something I make will allow me to fully understand whats going on in the project, and learn more.

what about altcoins and other crypto projects? there are many crypto and blockchain projects working around here and there, you can easily join any of their team and make your spare time useful in helping them.

Yes, it's better to look for some activities to follow some altcoin projects as managers in ICO projects, maybe there you can add insight on everything about it.

Bitcoin in itself is quite complex. The most basic thing you can open source is maybe a bitcoin payment gateway or a block explorer.Using the libraries I hope it isn't all that difficult.

How about cryptocurrency calculator and price widget? The features is all in one. I see there are pretty much price widget app but not including calculator feature and vise versa.
The app itself will be useful if available on mobile.

Maybe a faucet script for some cryptocurrency?

Automating any tasks on BTC/cryptocurrency platforms are a good practice, really Smiley

If you are a master of programming you must build a program that exactly be competent with bitcoin itself. When talking about website I don't think that it can be reasonable ways of generating profit for now because, most of btc investors were now looking for a better digital crypto currency that they could rely for. Profitable means of investments should be build and website building is nothing without a programmed latest coin for everyone that will uprise to bitcoin capability in the near future of currencies.

Can you go into more detail about it? This looks like something I can make.

I could just make the website responsive, instead of making an app.

Well, with cordova, your website would run on the smartphone. Which might have the advantage, that you could poll prices and then alarm the user, if price has reached some value.

OTOH; if you could create such a site, you also might be able to create your own exchange which could generate much more profit.
