Why does the mainstream media ignore altcoins?

Marketing.

Bitcoin is sexy. It's Silk Road and Darknet and Randomware and Chinese Mining Conglomerates.

Ethereum sounds like a Greek morality tale. Bad marketing. But don't worry, Ethereum will get there eventually.

I mean, hell, "Walmart" sounds like a place that sells faux wood paneling, but look where it is today.

I agree, a good name is definitely important in establishing a reputation early. While I'm not the biggest lover of Dash, their name is, in my opinion, one of the best, at least compared to something like "Bitcrystals" or "Decred". I think devs are becoming more aware that you need to design your coin with at least some degree of accessibility in mind, and Dash have done an excellent job of this.

They are still small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.. it's kind of like how they focus on gold and ignore silver, platinum, palladium, and rhodium.  Gold is the "standard" used by the rich, similar to how bitcoin is regarded.

Because most of the altcoins are just pump and dump coins and no real life use cases. If you think the media will sift through those altcoin to find any news worthy coin, they won't. And besides, I view mainstream media as a paid news. They'll broadcast any news that will make them money. And altcoins is not one of them.

There is plenty of coverage of alts in the mainstream media.

Doge got loads of coverage worldwide when they were sponsoring that Jamaican bob-sled team, and again when they did that Nascar sponsorship.

Basically you need to have something eye-catching about your coin, and they'll cover it. A shitcoin that is exactly like all the rest will get ignored.

ETH is an altcoin, the mainstream media does not ignore ETH.

$LGD gets the most mention.  Love it or hate it the media can't stop talking about it. And it will get much much more attention when the club opens.

If they ignore let them ignore, it's better, who cares about mainstream media, it's another old business going down. No-one believes shit about what they say anymore.
