Although people living in consumer-based cultures such as the U.S. often believe that they will be happier if they acquire more money, the findings of a newly published paper by a University at Buffalo research team suggest that there may be downsides to this pursuit. The pursuit of money in and of itself is not bad, but there are risks to consider when it is fueled by a desire to boost self-esteem. When people tie their self-worth to the pursuit of financial success, they are more vulnerable to negative psychological consequences, according to Lora Park, an associate professor of psychology at UB and the study's lead author.

Your topic is misleading.  The article claims that staking one's self-worth on the pursuit of money makes one more vulnerable to negative psychological consequences.  Most everyone must pursue money to survive in this world and the pursuit of money alone is not the concern.

Everyone should know by now that pegging self-worth to external factors like appearance and wealth is not healthy but it's really hard not to. We live in a society where that matters and it's hard to go against the flow.

I would know. I basically fucked up and has been jobless for years and I'm definitely not happy with what money I have now. Let's face it, many can buy happiness indirectly because it provides us options. The feeling of despair that comes along with not having money is not just because you love money, it's because you feel boxed in, without escape.

Again, everything in moderation. Money can provide you comfort and you do get happy as you earn more but only up to a certain point. https://www.forbes.com/sites/robertglatter/2012/07/27/how-much-money-do-you-need-to-be-happy-2/#3eaa4f312043 From that point onwards, it really boils down to outlook.

So work for money, but just don't let pursuit of it eat you up. And don't be ashamed to pursue it. Someone has said "if money can't buy you happiness, poverty can't buy you anything,".

like all in life need a balance, money and the pursuit of it applied to this phrase, in this modern era we need money to survive, money is a power around the world that we need to have for food, services, education, etc... but like all things, much money for one person actually have a negative result in the live of one person.

Yes, everything needs a balance. Without money, it's impossible at all, but you do not need to pursue too much money.

This is something that is always going to happen due to human greed and want for more and more, you can'y just simply tell someone to stop going ahead and trying to get money because people are never going to know when to stop and what to stop for.

Greed is a horrible thing, but you can't simply balance out human greed just by saying that people trying to get more and more money are going to have negative consequences, no one is going to care in the least.

People know money is the root of all evil, you don't see anyone doing a thing about it though, do you?

Money isn't the root of all evil. Rather, the LOVE of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

I will share with you some of the best quotes I know about topic of greed, social climbing, wealth. Please enjoy:

- We live in a world of things, and our only connection with them is that we know how to manipulate or to consume them.

- Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction.

- The only truly affluent are those who do not want more than they have.

- As we ascend the social ladder, viciousness wears a thicker mask.

- Not he who has much is rich, but he who gives much.

Read and ponder for a moment. All quotes by Erich Fromm.

For how much money would you give a grossly obese, old, smelly man a blowjob? What is your price? Serious question. "Happiness" is worth a little work, dont you agree?

I find it quite remarkable that marxist would by reasoning alone realize that spirit and matter are two essentially different things. Freud towards end of his life aswell admitted, that vast majority of people cannot live with physical sensations alone, pointing to the God as natural counterpart of material world in Man´s soul.

Unfortunately, thinkers of this calibre were and are in small minority among western secularists.

Not quite right. It's not money that makes us happy, but what we can buy for them.

Money buys options and having more options is more likely to make you happy, or at least give you an illusion of control, which reduces stress.

I think what's more troubling is not that people feel they need money to be happy but the negative attitudes people have towards money. Poor people, who believe money would make them happier, tend to despise those who are more well-off, making themselves believe that those people just happened to be lucky, or have an unfair advantage, or doing something evil to become rich. This attitude then stop people from becoming rich themselves.

I also used to feel that way, though it changed a bit when I read some of Steve Siebold's books. Still not happy with my financial situation but at least I'm no longer sour-graping at the rich.

Money does make you happy even if you don't buy anything with it. It gives you peace of mind, comfort and even confidence. I would love to have a few million sitting in my bank account. I wouldn't even need to spend it just to keep it there for a rainy day. Life would be much happier I assure you. Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't had the opportunity to have extra money in the bank.

I like this one:

"- As we ascend the social ladder, viciousness wears a thicker mask."

I personally experienced this, but the worst is descending the social ladder. People changed around me, I was quite shock and surprise with the attitude of the people around me when I was already descending and going down. I didn't understand what's going on around me. I keep asking why? And I only answer I get is because I lost and don't have the money anymore. So sad to tell all of you the truth. But I have recovered already and now I truly understand the value of money specially around people.

And that is enough to have financial security - which makes one very very very happy.

Prostitution is generally a very relative concept. Every woman wants to have a rich husband and live in abundance. What is this not prostitution? Everyone needs money. I believe that any earnings is acceptable if does not harm others. Anyone who earns € 10,000 in the industry are poisoning nature and does more harm than a prostitute, but respect him.

When a man provides a family, this is not considered prostitution. A wife can feed him in return, take care of the house and children.

This is not prostitution but sponsoring. There's a difference.
Sponsoring is when a woman finds a rich man that she doesn't love, but she satisfies his needs in exchange for money.
Prostitution is a bit different, because a woman doesn't try to create a relationship and frequently changes men.

There's also e-whoring, where girls fake internet relationships usually to scam you and sell you fake nudes, but sometimes to become popular, get social media followers and likes.

You are trying to evade the question, my friend  Smiley yes, indeed material possesions makes life more comfortable to live. I could write books about this topic.

But you have said something different. Enough money = happiness. Less than "enough" = unhappiness.

There are people in the world, who unlike you dont have opportunities to make 10 000 euros per month. What would you advise them to be happy, if you find blowjobs below your high standarts? Do you feel happy right, now?

You see where I am going with this.

You cannot buy state of mind. Material and spiritual are two absolutely different things.

ok first things first:

no, i wouldnt suck a dick for any amount of money because i earn good money by other means.

second, where did i say you need x amount of money to be happy?
you quoted me and interpreted something into it - read it again.

it is about financial security. do you need an explanation of financial security?
(in my case i live in germany - so with an monthly income of 10.000+ € you wont have trouble with living a comfortable and happy life)

edit:

about your last sentence. a good state of mind neither feeds you or your family. nor does it buy you clothes, a car or a house.

i agree these two concepts are different but they of course are still connected with each other.

i.e. happy mind + starving = not funny; unhappy mind + full belly = atleast you dont die; happy mind + full belly = n1

the human being cannot be split, his mind and his body will (for now) always form a symbiotic relationship.

Do you agree?

I dont really agree when it stated that people will be happier if they got a lot of money, money has become somebody measurement to measure happiness but that is not entirely true, there a lot of thing in this world that cant be bought using money, we need money in this world but we need to balance our life, too money minded will make you not enjoying your life and can caused you your health

Money is a good servant but a bad master said one book. We are all in pursuit of money, after all, we can really live today without it. Even if you are someone living in a cabin in some secluded area, you can't make everything and have to buy them. I guess only people who lose sight of why they were trying to make money in the first place would really have a problem.

Prostitution is the same. Just you covertly, told about the same. There is a trade, and there is a natural exchange. If in a poor country prostitutes will take the service of food, what would you call it prostitution or a civil marriage?

Civil marriage for me is the same hidden prostitution. A normal family in which a man is engaged in providing and protecting the natural function of the male is different from the consumer attitude.

Even the official family is the same. A man can get sex from a prostitute and pay her money for it, and she already buys all that she needs. In marriage, the wife tells you what to buy you bring and you get sex. What's the difference?

I guess the difference would be that both man and "wife" are working in your prostitution scenario whereas in your official version of family the woman isn't working.  Also, prostitutes are generally not interested in having children.

Do you agree?

I agree. People are often corrupted. Having money is everything , having a better life, but with a developed society, with a lot of money people will easily be deformed, reliant or even become a bad person.

Unfortunately people get used to the half and sooner or later will be the question of how to legalize their relationship. In addition, there is the concept of civil marriage. It can even without the wedding to seize his money.
