I think it's a fkd up situation right now.

The April 16th referendum has expanded Tayyip Erdogan’s authoritarian powers, so right now the latest news report full censorship in every media: "this Saturday nearly 4,000 public officials sacked, a ban placed on all dating shows in the country, as well as blocked access to Wikipedia". Those officials fired included people in the justice ministry, the army, the air force, and academics.

But this is normal, i guess, since we are talking about a full dictatorship...

Till now they have arrested more than 100,000 people (Gulen supporters). Some of them have been released, but many of them are still in detainment. Reminds me of the great purge by Josef Stalin during the 1930s and the 1940s.

Heard something about them blocking Wikipedia and arresting 4000 people...

All began after the alleged attempted Coup d'état (stroke of state) last year.
I said alleged because there are many rumors that president Erdogan organized it in order to justify restriction of political freedom and democracy in Turkey.
After that event Erdogan, without any trial, closed many political opponents and journalists and he dismissed many soldiers, policemen and teachers.
It's the first time in the last 100 years of history that Turkey has returned from the path of democracy to the dictatorship of Sultans.

If it's really true that majority of Turks voted to give him more power (there are accusations of vote result tampering), then they're getting the government they truly deserve. Really sad since they seem to even have a better government system than in my country and they're now throwing it away. He's concentrating power into a single position and that don't always have good result.

At least it's not as brutally theatrical as Saddam Hussein's purge... at least not yet.

Maybe Erdogan wants to build his own Islamic Caliphate. Democracy rarely works in Muslim countries. They prefer sharia and other medieval forms of government.

It is not possible to blame Erdogan for whatever happening there. A few months back, some people were trying to overthrow him in a military coup. He somehow survived that attempt. Who knows what could have happened, if the coup was successful?

I think that the reason is not that Muslims prefer. The reason is that the level of education in many Islamic countries is very weak. To lead the uneducated mob can only use the rigid dictatorship.

You need to remember that Turkey is not a very homogeneous society. In the Western part and the coast, the people are quite secular and opposed to Islamism. Also, in the South-east the Kurds oppose Islamism of Erdogan and his AK party. If Erdogan converts Turkey in to an Islamic Caliphate, then the West and the South-east will break away.

I don't think people should really be surprised at this moment, would anyone really think this wouldn't happen as we've seen what dictatorships do and what they can do, at this moment I would say the people of critical are pretty lucky seeing what other dictators have done at certain moments.

Kind of sad to not see any of the world superpowers coming out and questioning the legitimacy of the referendum which some people swear had to be rigged as no one with their right mind would come out and vote for something like this, unless they were coerced or the ballots were stuffed.

I do wish anyone that is from Turkey and on here some luck, you're going to need it.

Turkey is 99.8% Muslim, and their mosques are government funded... there is no separation of church and state in Turkey

Erdogan essentially elected himself dictator for life (12 more years, but he'll extend that again)

There was massive voting fraud... everything from changing laws on stuffing ballot boxes with unlawful votes, to displacing people so they have no physical mailing address and can't vote

This guy is a authoritarian dictator... he locks people in prison for making jokes about him... there is no freedom of speech in Turkey

The only worse world leader I can think of is Duterte

I read somewhere that this was a mistake for Ataturk. He moved the capital away from Constantinople to Ankara, which is in a much more religious region.

I live in the Philippines and Duterte is yet to go around imprisoning dissidents. All those killings though are being blamed at him. He may not have a hand in them, but his attitude towards them definitely encourages both vigilantes and police. A few days ago people are found in a police station, imprisoned in a cell hidden behind a bookcase.

I think that Erdogan can of course try to change the political system in Turkey, but do not forget that in this country of frequent revolutions. Let's hope that Erdogan will pay the price for his dictatorial tendencies.

Heard something about them blocking Wikipedia and arresting 4000 people...

For Bitcointalk members? Armageddon.

For people in Turkey? Wednesday.

Seriously, you can come here and ask simple question about any country. But dont expect simple and short answer. Turkey has mixed political system arift between Europe and Asia, religion and secularism, traditionalism and modernity. You wont find any simple answers in such places. Just more questions.

You really are right. I have not paid attention to this before, but life in Turkey is really difficult because of divergent views about everything.

It seems to me that in Turkey coup. Then when wanted to shift Erdogan, I do think that it was a performance which itself is of Erdogan played. Now he will establish in Turkey a dictatorship.

No, and never. Erdogan can't be overthrown when he enjoys close to 60% approval. I am surprised that you posted this, after what we had in 2016 (the failed coup attempt by the Gulen supporters). That incident proved that he can't be overthrown.

I think that Erdogan can of course try to change the political system in Turkey, but do not forget that in this country of frequent revolutions. Let's hope that Erdogan will pay the price for his dictatorial tendencies.

No, and never. Erdogan can't be overthrown when he enjoys close to 60% approval. I am surprised that you posted this, after what we had in 2016 (the failed coup attempt by the Gulen supporters). That incident proved that he can't be overthrown.
It seems to me that it was not a coup, and performance. Erdogan himself has orchestrated this coup to be able to increase its influence and to deal with the opposition. Such a coup is impossible so quickly and without fighting to suppress.
