I'm new to mining and want know more about it. Can please explain me how to use the mining button in the litecoin and feathercoin client?

as i understand u can set gen=1 in config or -gen as argument and mine with ur client (on ur cpu)

i wondered myself ;P

Put the miner program in the same folder as the wallet.

There is GUI Miner out which, as I understand, is a lot more robust than the built in miner.  For an easy mining experience, I would recommend that.

Yes you are best off using a proper mining application than the one built into the wallet

Popular ones are CGminer and Reaper. GUIminer is also an option and provides a fairly hassle free setup
