Frustrating, been trying for the past day o access my wallet that i backed up a few years ago.  I am a total novice when it comes to bitcoin so I have no idea what I'm doing.  I've searched the forum and done what I think needs to be done but still same result.

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Many people report problems letting Armory manage bitcoind.  I suggest you unselect it.   Then stop Armory, and start Bitcoin Core.  Wait until it has finished syncing, then restart Armory.

Note that Bitcoin Core will download something like 75 GB of data that it will store on your harddisk.  Downloading and verifying all that data is going to take several days.  If you are not willing or able to do that (e.g. if you pay per MB download) then another option is to start Armory, then import the wallet backup, then view the wallet and manually copy each private key out of Armory and into another client, where you can "sweep" that key.  That is a tedious process, so getting Armory up and running is of course preferable.

Good luck!
