Bitcoin might be getting some profile by The Economist

I've just recently got into Bitcoins and I am very intrigued to say the least. I called up an old friend from college (he writes for The Economist) to see if he had heard about Bitcoins and I was surprised to hear that he and a few of his colleagues have already been researching about Bitcoins for a story. He said they were going pretty in-depth into how the currency works (the proof-of-work distributed computing, Satoshi Nakamoto's paper, etc) as well as the case for an anonymous currency. But the real juicy bit is this: it's going into the print edition! No idea if it will be on the front page but he did say it was feature length so it is highly probable that it could be. I'm aware of his current deadline, but to prevent the Bitcoin market from getting even more sporadic than it is I won't be publicly revealing the edition it is being published in.

I just read an abridged version of the 'Bits and bob' article in the digital version (on iPad) of June 18th-24th 2001 edition of The Economist. This represents what is in the print edition. It is much shorter than online version http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2011/06/virtual-currency, cutting out all the technical details. It tells the reader to learn more about how Bitcoin works, visit www.economist.com/blogs/babbage.
So, while not front page, it is under the 'Finance and economics' section and not the 'Science and technology' section.
They end the print version of the article with: "Bitcoin is technically sophisticated. As a monetary system, it looks primitive."

They're going to be writing something a little longer and more in-depth like the real world applications that have sprung up using Bitcoins and such.
