Review of Galax 1070 Katana GPU ( it has arrived)

Note It has arrived.  Test build is below.

I like this card so much I ordered a second and almost certainly will order a third .

My goal is to have a 3x  Galax katana 1070 plus 1 x founders edition 1080 ti   In a rosewill case  with about 1800-1900 Sols for ZEC and under 600 watts. At about 2.1k for the build.

This will be riser free and should fit in a data center rack.

And not be smoking stupid hot.

this is the only way to buy it in the usa.

My guess is  even though it reads in stock.  The stock may not be in the USA.  
They  wait for  enough people to order it from the USA link  and ship  at that point.

I did business with them 1 other time...  And   they were slow to ship.

But I can use this size card in  a few of my builds.  So I am willing to wait a bit.  

It is 9 am  In NY  and they are near Chicago  So  maybe they will reply to my email  in a few hours.

It is a paypal order  so I do not have fear of a ripoff in any way.



UPDATE: I got an email response it is expected to ship may 10 via fedex.  I may get it by fri or next monday.

I will slot mount all three cards.

goal  will be 1200-1300 sol/h for zec

using under 400 watts for the three  cards.

yeah it should work great on the bioster z170 boards.

but with the katana 3 cards and no risers should be easy .

give 1 slot spacing seems wise for this card. I read some reviews from Chinese websites, this card likely does nothing better than 1070FE in cooling. And it's not exactly the blower type as FE, hot air comes out at 1/4 position so definitely will need some spacing. The four slots Biostar boards is a good choice.

Also this is not the first time Galax makes this type single slot card, usually even in China the supply could be limited as it's not as popular.

And it's a heavy card.

Interested in seeing how well this card cools also given it's the blower design with less area to move air through like the FE version. I've seen a few of these at one of my local MicroCenters but never thought much about them since I use risers and had never heard of it, so def interested in your testing results as I'm only building Nvidia 1070/1080/1080ti rigs from now on...

lot of copper in it vs aluminum.

on open air  flat mobo setups like the one below it should be good.

Getting enough air flow across the cards would be Job 1.

without additional power for the pci slots you will draw all from your atx conenctor and risk to destroy it is very high on the long run if you employ 6 cards....

you are wrong.

Those boards  have run  4 rx 480s   for months with zero issues  it drew 600 watts and used four slots.

the entire three card rig  now draws under 550 watts.

the three cards are using  5 pcie cables  most power is pcie cable

I also have down clocked to 55% tdp  to avoid over heating.

Right now my garage  is pretty hot around 90f

You can see the card is warm as it  runs  at 71 c  with fans set to 75%

note is only doing  314 sols  due to low  tdp of 55%  82 watts 3.83 sols a watt

the middle 1080 ti is doing 522 sols at 55% tdp  142 watts 3.65 sols a watt

and the fat ass aorus is doing 652 sols at 59 %  163 watts 4.00 sols a watt   using 2 8 pin pcie cables

a five card rx 480  would do  1442 sol at 700-750 watts not flashed and maybe  600 watts flashed.

the space is much smaller  for this rig.  more testing need.

Yeah I will do more testing.

Sometimes cards don't mix well.

The setup now is not ideal.

Three different cards. Can make driver conflicts.

little tweak  and big improvements.

boosted power less then 15 watts


moved tdp from 55 to 65 moved fan to 80%  temps dropped  to 69c   hash is up. sols to watts is better.

the katana looks good.  69C at 85% fan   384 sol

how hot is your garage?

what are the amps  running this?

what are the amps  with it fully turned off.
