so the 3 cards are now 1572 sol.

the katana looks good.  69C at 85% fan   384 sol

how hot is your garage?

and I know  you are running  a lot of gear on you pdu

what are the amps  running this?

what are the amps  with it fully turned off.

7.0 amps all gear running

5.0 amps this rig off.

2 x 240 = 480 watts at pdu.

I am getting 1572  sols   so at the wall 3.275 sols per watt

the katana seems stable at 65% tdp 96-97 software watts about 3.9 sols a watt.

that is a very nice rig size and only a 850 watt quark plat psu which was on sale for 109.

so this compares to a five card rx 480

 1572 sol nvidia ----------------------- 1500 sol amd
    480 watts  -------------------------       740 watts

a evga 750 p2 will run it ------------ 1000 watt evga p2 will run it
no risers -----------------------------     5 risers needed
  3 gpus     -----------------------------    5 gpus

lets say mobo ram cpu = same cost.

  3 gpus on sales = 1800                      5 gpus on sale  rx 480's or 580s about 1250
   riser = 0                                           risers = 40
  120 for psu                                        180 psu

5 bucks  a piece of plywood for mobo                20- 30 dollars for a wood case diy

1925 cost and same for mobo, cpu, ram nvidia

1500 for   and same for mobo, cpu, ram amd

the nvidia are much more dense.
and allow for more hash with same power.

in my case  I would have 5 nvidia rigs using 2400 watts for 7886 sols

I would use 2960 watts  with  4 rigs of amd  giving me about 6000 sols  if I really was good with flashing
I would use 2400 watts with 4 rigs of amd giving me about 6000 sols

so the density and low watts push me towards the nvidia

thats why i want nvidia for those stats you just posted!!

but im going to hold off till vega
if vega flops then im going deep into nvidia they will have a lot of my btc

without additional power for the pci slots you will draw all from your atx conenctor and risk to destroy it is very high on the long run if you employ 6 cards....

you are wrong.

Those boards  have run  4 rx 480s   for months with zero issues  it drew 600 watts and used four slots.

the entire three card rig  now draws under 550 watts.

the three cards are using  5 pcie cables  most power is pcie cable

I also have down clocked to 55% tdp  to avoid over heating.

Right now my garage  is pretty hot around 90f

You can see the card is warm as it  runs  at 71 c  with fans set to 75%

note is only doing  314 sols  due to low  tdp of 55%  82 watts 3.83 sols a watt

the middle 1080 ti is doing 522 sols at 55% tdp  142 watts 3.65 sols a watt

and the fat ass aorus is doing 652 sols at 59 %  163 watts 4.00 sols a watt   using 2 8 pin pcie cables

i was not speaking about your setup but i was refering to the dude  willing to stick 6 katanas without powered risers in a x99 motherboard. i dont think is a good idea. katana ha only 1slot  and will drew also 75w from pcie

Yeah but. They don't pull 75 watts from the slot.

The entire rig I built has two 1080 ti's and one 1070 katana.

And it pulls 2 amps at the wall. Or 480 watts.

These three cards are not pulling 225 at the slots.

And only 255 at the pcie cables.

I understand that six slots  can't feed that much power but the katana is not pulling 75 watts at the slot.

Tomorrow I rearrange and do three 1070's
You will see that the rig will do about 350 watts at the wall.

There is no way that 225 of the 350 watts the rig will use is slot based.

that katana single slot seems ok. whats the noise level compared to double wides?

i had a single slot HD4850 back in btc mining days, only problem was the heat sink would clog easily with dust  as fins were so finely pitched. i had to pull it once a month or so and blow the thing out from the back towards to fan. had decent filtering on the rig too.

be nice to pack 3 or 4 of those in a matx board in a smallish case with some serious filtered fans. small, cat proof.

Too much gear to tell sound.

I think I am going to order 3  more of these

On its side this case would work

yeah  four of them on this board would fit easy.

1500-1600 zec machine under 500 watts

yeah that seems like a nice case. cheap too. maybe throw some deltas in it for serious airflow and its a nice enclosed system with some decent hash.

500 watts for a powerful miner is nice. im power limited at the moment. 1200 watts max and im at 700+ watts now, depending on algo. all amd on eth and dcr here for now.

Installing 7x cards directly in PCI-E on an X99 motherboard is not an issue at all even if the card has one power plug.

I have 7x 1070 Strix directly installed on PCI-E slots on an X99 motherboard, all good.

Great review, keep us updated !

is that worth it price wise? 7 custom blocks plus loop and pump/radiator vs another mobo/cpu/ram/ssd? single server psu with two picos could run both i would think.

You can always put the stock coolers back on to resell them.  The water blocks will most likely work with the next gen cards.

Out of respect to philipma1957 and his efforts to share great information with us, i would rather avoid deviating from the main subject of this thread. [Review of Galax 1070 Katana GPU]
I'll just share info which is needed for this thread.
7x 1070's can in fact be plugged directly into a X99 (one's with 7 PCI-E slots) and it will work.      https://i.imgur.com/0Wzr621.jpg

In the Katan case, it even can be done without modifying the card. Now, the compatibility question has been answered, the new question is heat.
