This is one area where many government agencies are voicing concern of. Because of the seeming anonymity of Bitcoin transactions, it can become the number one tool for many ransomware programmer/hackers to spread their menace on the global scale.

There must be a way to address this concern so as not to put a cap to the continuing growth and the entrance of Bitcoin into the mainstream. Ransomware can put a havoc to Bitcoin if not controlled.

Somewhat true, but I doubt the government's intentions are very good.  It's more likely that they're trying to find negative things about Bitcoin so they can be more aggressive to it while viewing it as a public threat.

It's like terrorism.  It happens and it's bad, but that doesn't mean the American government had to pass the Patriot Act.

By the same 'logic" computers and the internet are fueling ransomware growth. Pre computers and pre internet there was no ransomware

Its a good thing that government is voicing its concern, however, I believed that its the individual responsibility to protect us against this kind of attack. The Internet has been a huge gift for criminals not only for ransomware but also like Trojans, malware, hacking and all kinds o illegal activities to exploit someone. Bitcoin is just the latest because its anonymity and de-centralized designed which unfortunately boosting criminal activities underground. So we need to be careful and not just click anything we see only to avoid this kind of situation in the future which will result in the lost of our hard earned bitcoin.

People should take care of their own. As mentioned above, there is absolutely no need to click on links or to download something from whatever source just because you think you need it. If you get your PC locked, and are forced to pay whatever ransom amount, then it's purely YOUR fault. Nothing can change that - just don't dare to blame Bitcoin for that. I am extremely paranoid when it comes to links or downloads. I never click on links - if someone wants to show me an article for example, I manually browse to the site (if it is a legit news site and not a brand new one), and look for the article myself. I don't download anything from the internet. If I need software but don't want to pay for it, I use open source alternatives that are freely available. I don't have a single pirated bit of software running on any of my systems.

Blaming the tools instead of identifying the problem. Smiley
Organizations should invest more in security. Governments should find and prosecute ransomware creators, instead of talking about how Bitcoin is enabling ransomware.

Great article!
Only full system backups (to offline drives) can protect your data from various ransomwares!
