Hi,

Both my friend and I invested heavily in bitcoin late 2013. We both created blockchain wallets at the time. I however moved my coins over the years to an electrum wallet.

At the time he backed up the wallet file and printed out a 12 word mnemonic as did I, the printout contains a string of characters (some type of hash?) followed by the 12 words. It was not a 17 word string. However the backup is useless as he has forgotten his password, although he says he hasn't and the password which is written down does not work.

I believe the mnemonic at the time was an encryption of the wallet identifier and the password and not a seed to derive wallet addresses and private keys.

Blockchain.info recovery HD page is not accepting the string and the legacy wallet option expects 17 words.

Support are of no help and say the words must be wrong even though it's a printout from the time.

Anybody any ideas? Is there a tool anywhere to make use of this string of 12 words?

Thanks a lot.

Did you try importing it in electrum or other client? If your backup is not encrypted then you can restore or import it in other wallet. I have tried it previously with my wallet which I created in mycelium and imported it using the seed 12 words to electrum to gain access to it. I'm not sure if your also referring to that 12 words.

Its unfortunate you have to face this after making a wise investment decision as at the time when  only few people would take such risk. Now when you are to reap the benefit of your investments, challenges surfaces. Support would likely not attend to you because of the enormous request that they face on a daily basis. What I will suggest is that you try login into the wallet again and trace how the bitcoin moved. Also, you can try additional digging of your records if you can find useful details if not, I am afraid you might have lost it forever.

I have seen a lot of people complaining lately about Blockchain.info and most complaints are coming since they "upgraded" the UI. I also had

some problems when I wanted to login to the online wallet I created back then. { popup blockers do not mix well with their new UI } Have they

changed the 12 word mnemonic to a 17 word mnemonic lately? Mine is locked up in a safe deposit box, so I cannot check it now.   Sad

That's unfortunate. I never heard any stories that blockchain.info helped their customers to recover a wallet which they have lost the password, if there is then it's minimal. how much btcs do you have in that wallet? Maybe someone in here who has more ideas in technical can help you.

That is the reason why everyone say that do not use online wallet if you are having some high amount of bitcoin for storing. I also do not use any online wallet for my storage and use only one web wallet for my running transactions while if I feel that I do not need any bitcoin which I have in my web wallet then I transfer them to my desktop wallet.

I would like to ask the same thing on how much bitcoin you do have on that wallet and if you store up hundreds or decent amount then better to always keep on seeking solution into these problem. As far as i remember blockchain do need 12 string of words but knowing about 17 as of now seems they changed it.If thats the case then theres possibility to re-access that wallet.

There's a legacy recovery page on Blockchain. The modern one accepts 12 words, and creates a new wallet and imports the old one from the backed up words. I hope that works. If not message me and I hope I can help more.
