I don't know how it works, but from the usage point, it should be just another genesis block, that requires bitcoin payment in order to write on it. It shouldn't have it's own currency, or any mining related activities on it.

You can also register alternative decentralized domains with it.
.bit is actually supported.

Bitcoin is to pay or to transfer money, namecoin is to register decentralized domains(you can trade them also), the others are only to speculate at the moment because they have no real use. Litecoin has some acceptance as payment currency but very low compared with bitcoin.

Namecoin is perhaps the only legitimate alt coin.
It has a use other than what Bitcoin is about, and actually complements Bitcoin.
Satoshi even talked about such a decentralized dns use for the blockchain.

It isn't just about being jealous of Bitcoin early adopters and creating a near-clone coin as some kind of get rich quick scheme, like litecoin
and so many others.

What happens when asics start coming out for ltc, for example, and a new group of people sees that they have missed that boat too...
will new clone-envy-scam-coins keep being created?

There is a lot of nonsense being spread about ltc, trying to make it seem like a legit coin with actual uses and advantages over Bitcoin...
all nonsense, and I don't care enough about it to even get into a debate about it so don't bother trying to drag me into that.

Just stick with Bitcoin if you believe in it as a global p2p payment network, and namecoin if you believe in it for decentralized domain name services.

If you are just into cryptocurrency looking to get rich, well speculate with all these new scam coins all you want but don't complain if you get burned.

This is just my opinion... consider it, or dismiss it all, as you choose.

What about PPC?  Not even a contender?

I agree, I think that any new coin should have some added value that is clearly different from Bitcoin. And namecoin seems to be the only one that has this (maybe also Ripple)

I like Namecoin and other financially pointless alts for the purpose of developing other uses for bitcoin.  There could be a million applications beyond currency and the fact that some computer power has gone into namecoin and like, devcoin, means that they could be used to set up and experiment with.  For that matter, if someone wanted to use crypto-currency as for instance part of a game or other online service,it is not unreasonable that they could adopt one of these rather than starting their own.  But as money.  I like bitcoin only.

Nice insights, Portnoy and Minerthreat.

Ultimately the viability of each currency will be decided by its utility as determined by... all of us!

It's an exciting thing to be a part of.
