SHA256 and Scrypt are two different hashing algorithms.
An ASIC can be designed to do only one thing.*
Bitcoin uses SHA256, so Bitcoin mining ASICs can only compute SHA256.
So no, a bitcoin mining ASIC cannot be used to mine litecoins or any other coin that uses scrypt.
Namecoin uses SHA256 and can actually be merge-mined alongside bitcoin so you can definitely mine namecoins with a bitcoin ASIC.
*That "one thing" could actually be to do multiple things (like a GPU ASIC that can be programmed) but in the case of bitcoin mining ASICs, the one thing is only SHA256.

scrypt: pain in the ass finding best settings for new comers and not only, using a lot of power resulting in fast wear of your cards. Basically scrypt is killing the card, meaning no later resale .

One uses puppy eyeballs to complete calculations (eyeballs are consumed in the process), the other uses kitten hearts (also consumed in the process). You can't substitute one for the other. |
