Hi,

Other than coinbase and bitstamp, can you list 5, preferably trustworthy and with low fees.
Make sure you back up your wallet regularly! Unlike a bank account, nobody can help you if you lose access to your BTC.

For simple straightforward ways of getting bitcoins other than the two you listed, Kraken is one and Localbitcoins is probably your best option.

You could also find individuals on this forum looking to sell bitcoins under the "Currency Exchange" section.
