i received bitcoins and its been hanging for days with many tx unconfirmed..

is there a way i can tell if one of the pending txs gets double spent(from my understanding, meaning that mine will never confirm)

Is there a tool etc for it?

blockchain.info will usually display a warning if there's something wrong with your transaction. Mind posting the transaction id, or running your transaction trough my feechecker? http://www.mocacinno.com/page/feechecker

This probably means you want a transaction to exist (with valid scripts - meaning it will not be rejected by the network).
Could you post the TX and the wallet you're using (as there may be a tool specific to that)?

Your transaction is: https://blockchain.info/tx/f20a0bc73152eb5a5c54bb9abc71631eba55abdd624cc6d55e3c0db69f2449b6
The following transactions has to confirm before your transaction is confirmed. The following transactions are:
https://blockchain.info/tx-index/249244430/1
https://blockchain.info/tx-index/249215083/1
https://blockchain.info/tx-index/249006563/0

https://blockchain.info/tx-index/248980590/0
https://blockchain.info/tx-index/248683549/1

From what I can tell, there isn't any competing transactions that spends the same input as any of the transactions. However, I would really think that its hard for your transaction to confirm given the amount of unconfirmed inputs that it was referenced from, with some of the fees being as low as 8 satoshi/byte. You should contact a miner to help you to mine the chain of transactions, probably not free though.

Blockchain.info will state "double spend" if another transaction with the same input is in their mempool.

Quickseller also offers the service that macbook-air does. Or you could try to use viabtc per transaction to get them to be accelerated as that's free.

their fees are too low for viabtc..

someone should make a proper service to accelerate transactions even those with super low fees..

viabtc's txaccelerator is actually payed for by viabtc. I don't know why they do it... Maybe it's out of the goodness of their hearts, maybe it's politics, maybe it's to make a point,.. For every low fee transaction they accept, they cannot add a high-fee transaction to the block they're currently working on, so they're losing money on every submission you send.
Accepting transactions with an even lower fee would actually cost them even more. There are several services that accept even lower fee transactions, but they're not free, you actually have to pay for them. for example, https://pushtx.btc.com/#/ charges a high fee to add your low-fee (even 0 fee) transaction to the block they're working on. Quickseller and macbook-air are known to accept bounties to add low-fee transactions to f2pool blocks,...

I really like viabtc for what they're doing. They're providing a super service  to the community, but if i was in their shoes, i'd probably raise the minimum fee to accept low-fee transactions into my blocks (but i'm not that good of a person to begin with)

I answered this question in the previous post: https://pushtx.btc.com/#/ , Quickseller or macbook-air. All three even accept 0-fee transaction AFAIK, as long as the bounty you offer is high enough.

I can't find a transaction that double spends these inputs... However, it strikes me as odd that there are several of other transactions that depend on the output of this transaction, since both outputs have been used as inputs in a string of new (offcourse unconfirmed) transactions...

Also, most of these transactions seem to have 8 sat/byte fees!!!

Transactions that cannot be confirmed before this one is confirmed:

so what does this mean? what do you think happened or is happening.. this is basically why i created this thread to find out if theres a double spend somewhere..

I've edited the previous post... It looks like your transaction itself is relatively clean (the input it's using is coming from a confirmed transaction). offcourse, the fee is waaaaay to low (but you already knew this).
I couldn't find any double spends, but that doesn't mean they do not exist, merely that i couldn't find one. It's possible the input for this unconfirmed transaction was used in a second transaction, but this second transaction never reached blockchain.info???
Even if the input was double spent, it looks like the double spending transaction didn't make it in a block either, otherwise this transaction would be invalid.

The thing is, this whole unconfirmed outputs using as inputs for transactions with a 8 sat/byte fee tree is really not the proper way to do this. Some nodes will reject the transaction if the fee is this low, if a node receives a transaction using inputs that are not in it's utxo set (because a previous tx was rejected, or dropped from the mempool), it will also reject the new tx,...

Do you mind giving us some background? Is there an option to just wait a couple of days and start over, or maybe re-create this tree using the same initial input (in fact, double spending this input, but leaving a much higher fee)?

If you look at https://blockchain.info/tx/361e44dc8d1841168e0c2c5ee60fc65be149e7561897f7888d48ab4b5c84f2d3 it does look like both outputs have already been spent (altough the transactions are all unconfirmed). How did you do this, cause everything down the line is really messed up. Basically, all transactions you've made using the output of 361e44dc8d1841168e0c2c5ee60fc65be149e7561897f7888d48ab4b5c84f2d3 will remain unconfirmed untill 361e44dc8d1841168e0c2c5ee60fc65be149e7561897f7888d48ab4b5c84f2d3 is confirmed (maybe even longer).
Were this transactions between your own wallets?

Basically i paid for and received 12.584025 bitcoins in my blockchain, with this as the tx id> https://blockchain.info/tx/f20a0bc73152eb5a5c54bb9abc71631eba55abdd624cc6d55e3c0db69f2449b6

i paid someone locally and they sent me those coins and it shows up in my blockchain wallet but it also has 0 confirmations for days.

Im not bitcoin expert, but you seem to be.. based on what you're seeing what happened? i have only basic knowledge of coins

Well, if it were me, i'd stop everything i was doing and i'd go looking for the guy that sold me 12.584025 BTC (more than USD20.000 at current preev rate).
This guy has used a chain of unconfirmed inputs/outputs to create the tx paying you. Eventough your transaction has a very high fee, a lot of the unconfirmed transactions on which it depends have a substandard fee.
This is no way to sell somebody $20k worth of BTC. This is no way of doing business.

Just go back to this guy, ask him to either fix the transaction, give you your money back, or make him sign a legal paper detailing that he will pay you back if you don't receive your BTC in x hours/days...

Next time you buy BTC, either buy them trough a reputable escrow service like localbitcoins, on a reputable exchange like coinbase, or only hand over your money once the transaction is confirmed.

I tested this transaction in the btc.com accelerator, and it said it was a double spend

361e44dc8d1841168e0c2c5ee60fc65be149e7561897f7888d48ab4b5c84f2d3

https://pushtx.btc.com/#/

However, the btc.com block explorer said that transaction was either a double spend, or a removed transaction. That might mean the network is forgetting about it because its fee is so low, and its been unconfirmed for so long.

Yes, if any of the unconfirmed transactions in the network of chains leading to your transaction are removed your transaction will never confirm. The more time those transactions remain unconfirmed, the more likely it is that one or more of them will be removed.

so what next? how long will blockchain take to reverse funds back?

i mean cant blockchain see one transaction has been deleted, which nullifies every other transaction correct?

It works on a node by node basis... Each node can chose how long it keeps an unconfirmed tx in it's mempool, how big it's mempool can become, wether or not it rejects low-fee transactions,...
But yes, if a certain node drops the transaction all other transactions depend on, all depending transactions will also be removed from it's mempool, since they're now using inputs that are not in that node's utxo.

The default value is 3 days... If you transaction remains unconfirmed, most nodes will drop it after 72 hours (3 days). However, since each node can have it's own config, it can take much longer before most of the network forgot about your tx.

any chance the transaction will be re-added?

this problem with fees is a big flaw.. why would a system allow someone to send a TX with a fee so low that it never gets confirmed..

Shouldnt there be a low limit for bitcoin.. i mean its ridiculous.. Its like people need to get from New York to California, and you allow some people to put only 1 gallon of gas, while others can put 100 gallons..

Basically, you should never accept 0-conf transactions. If you're on the receiving end, never pay or deliver any product before a transaction has at least 1 confirmation.... If you're accepting 0.1BTC or more, i'd even advice to to wait for at least 3+ confirmations. I know this advice comes way to late in your case, and i agree that wallet software providers should probably make a bigger effort in marking unconfirmed transactions in their GUI, so new members don't get scammed by accepting 0-conf transactions.

any chance the transaction will be re-added?

You can re-add a transaction yourself by submitting it in hex format to this page.

https://blockchain.info/pushtx

You can get the hex format of a transaction by adding ?format=hex onto a blockchain.info link to it, then pressing your enter key. This is an example of a link with ?format=hex added.

https://blockchain.info/tx/361e44dc8d1841168e0c2c5ee60fc65be149e7561897f7888d48ab4b5c84f2d3?format=hex

Sometimes zero fee transactions eventually get confirmed when the network's not overloaded. The OP of this thread sent a zero fee transaction as a test to see what would happen. It surprised everyone by confirming after 11 days.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1818747.0

Another user sent a zero fee transaction at about the same time and the network forgot about it.

edit

If you want to keep re-adding all the transactions in the network of chains leading to yours until quickseller or macbook-air can confirm them, then keep submitting each of them to this page.

https://blockchain.info/pushtx

Click each of these links, copy and paste the text from them into the page linked above, then click the submit transaction button. I think all the relevant transactions are below, but I made the list in a hurry, so it might be best to check I didn't miss any yourself.

I tried adding it, it says transaction already exists!

any chance the transaction will be re-added?

You can re-add a transaction yourself by submitting it in hex format to this page.

From what I remember the nodes connected to blockchain.info usually forget about transactions faster than some other nodes. If you copy the hex data from each link you can submit it back to blockchain.info/pushtx after the blockchain.info explorer has forgotten about the transaction.

If it won't accept it, then try submitting the hex data to these other transaction pushers.

https://blockr.io/tx/push

https://live.blockcypher.com/bcy/pushtx/

Blockcypher says there is a low confidence this transaction will get confirmed, although it didn't detect a double spend. Blockchain.info received that transaction on May 9, so it's likely to forget about it soon.

Any update..

Has quickseller replied to you yet? He must be overwhelmed with requests to confirm transactions.

I just checked macbook-air's profile, and the last time he logged in here was on May 07. However  quickseller was logged in half an hour ago.

Still waiting to hear from macbook and quickseller for over a day

pushtx says my transaction is double spent, which is why i created this thread originally..

For example > 361e44dc8d1841168e0c2c5ee60fc65be149e7561897f7888d48ab4b5c84f2d3
"This is a double-spent tx, unavailable for acceleration"

In that case macbook and quickseller won't be able to help you.

They do not influence transactions that have been marked as double-spent tx.

The person that sent you the bitcoins screwed up by creating a transaction that isn't likely to confirm quickly.

You screwed up by giving them the cash and walking away after receiving a transaction that wasn't likely to confirm quickly.

Accepting an unconfirmed transaction is like accepting a check...  It's ok if you trust the person sending it to you, or if you don't mind if it isn't any good.

If there isn't an existing trust relationship, and actually receiving the bitcoins is important, then it is important to wait for at least 1 confirmation before providing anything of value in exchange for the bitcoins you are receiving.

Hopefully they'll be trustworthy and will fix this mess.  There isn't much you can do about it right now but wait and hope that the transaction will either confirm or that the original sender will figure out how to clean up their mess.

I understand, but there really is no double spend...

everyone has checked and confirmed.. i still think a good miner can salvage this transaction

I double checked that transaction on the blockcypher explorer and it didn't detect a double spend.

However, there's a high risk the network will start forgetting about your transaction (or others in the unconfirmed chain it's part of). Blockchain.info's node has recently forgotten about a similar transaction, although blockcypher's node still remembers it.

That transaction cannot confirm right now because it is funded with unconfirmed bitcoins that were received in the following two transactions:

07d32a8b417d90bb00d6acc752b0b6385105f901837b15606ba0d44d4d20373f (only paid a 0.00000120 BTC/byte fee)

Therefore, it is not possible for your transaction to confirm until both of these earlier transactions confirm.

Unfortunately one of those transactions cannot confirm right now because it is funded with unconfirmed bitcoins that were received in the following two transactions:

5a5149e1311fb393a7e1c0db20db2266dabfdb024f37ddf2a62df9c988e593e3 (only paid a 0.00000120 BTC/byte fee)

Therefore, it is not possible for that earlier transaction to confirm until all four of these even earlier transactions confirm.

Unfortunately two of those transactions cannot confirm right now because they are funded with unconfirmed bitcoins that were received in the following four transactions:

The good news is that none of these transactions seems to have a competing transaction confirmed, so you don't have a "double-spend attempt" situation or "double-spend attack" situation or whatever people are calling it right now when two transactions are broadcast that both spend the same outputs.

The bad news is every one of those transactions that only paid a fee of 0.00000008 BTC/byte are going to take a VERY long time (weeks?  months?) to confirm if they confirm at all.  The other bad news is that those transactions that only paid a fee of 0.00000120 BTC/byte are going to take a long time (days? weeks?) to confirm, and have a small chance of never confirming.

Perhaps you should talk to whomever spent unconfirmed bitcoins in the transaction that they sent you and explain to them that you don't appreciate it and that you refuse to engage in transactions with them in the future until they learn how to only spend confirmed bitcoins.

If you trust them to re-send the bitcoins with a transaction that will actually confirm once the existing transactions are forgotten by most of the network, then you can just wait a few more days.

If you are concerned that they may not re-send the bitcoins, and that they may try to broadcast a competing transaction that spends the same outputs, then you (or anyone else) can re-broadcast the existing transactions indefinitely until they either confirm or become invalid.

There are several websites that will broadcast a raw bitcoin transaction for you.  Here are a few of them:

You can use an internet search engine to find more if you like.

You just paste the raw transaction string into the web page and click the button.

You can also broadcast transactions with various wallets such as Bitcoin Core.

Here are all the unconfirmed raw transactions from my earlier post in case you or anyone else wants to keep broadcasting them every few days:
