So almost all of us know this term "whale" and it is used a lot when it comes to crypto currencies and their value, and especially around pumps and dumps when the perception is that a value manipulation is going on. But behind the term, there are people like you and me right?
So do you happen to know a whale in person? Or Are you a One?

Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

I'm not a whale and I don't know anyone. But I think whales love to work behind the scene. Those wealthy people who are out there investing in bitcoin wants to keep it low-key. There may be very well institutional investors, specially coming from USA, China, Canada and Japan. Whalers are real in the bitcoin ecosystem, But we may never know who are these large movers and shakers because they are out of sight and reach of a casual traders.

Even if I am one which I am not, you dont expect that I come out loud to say it. The fact is even if anybody comes out to say he is one, people like you and me will still doubt such individuals so our best bet is to just continue to play with the wind based on calculated risks and on day if luck shines on us, and when that happens, it will look as if we had insider information.

manipulation is not nessasarily coming from a whale in a sense that many thing someone with 10000BTC in his pocket.
the orderbooks are big but not that big, so with a smaller amount they can manipulate it. and it usually coming with some FUD and people panic sell and create that massive volume of 10000BTC. so in a sense you are right that "you and me" are behind the term.

Exactly, no whales will come up and show his face on the market. I can only speculate that some hedge fund institutions is representing them so to cover their tracks. Could be because they want to avoid paying large taxes. They may even be engaging on buying of hundreds or thousands of bitcoin without going through the regulars channels such as exchangers. Or even if they are going to exchangers, there will be a special arrangement for them because of the huge amount of bitcoin being moved.

I will not also tell someone if I'm a whale, I will just keep quiet and away from the prying eyes of the general public. Grin

Yeah how much bitcoin would exactly make that person a 'whale'. I don't even know a person with more than 20 BTC, well I can assume there are many on this forum who have more than that. If I had to take a guess then probably someone with more than 1000 BTC can be called a whale, or is it too much?

i also like to know who's the people behind some coins manipulation as we see movements coming from alts project and we haven't sure
if the hype is for real or just being manipulated by someone or some team which called their names as a whale, for me this thread will be
a good way to reveal their identity if ever someone will share some good information on how this can be determined.

First of all who is considered a "whale"? If you are talking about anyone with more than 500 BTC, Then Yes I know a guy who owns more than 500 BTC. He is not a close friend of mine but i came across him as an active trader. He is pretty public with his bitcoin stuff who are on his friend list.

Aside from being  single person, who are rich or holding a millions worth of coins as what we perceived a whale, there are also a group of persons who are considered whales. They pooled their resources, or having a group communications and plan their strategy to manipulate a coins they targeted. Someone before send me a private message  to join their group but I declined since I do not know them personally and possibly a fraud.

As per my knowledge the Exchange owners are the rich whales as they are earning huge bitcoins as transaction fees and they are holding so many bitcoins of the users of their exchange.

Most whales are pretty private about what they hold.  It's kind of obvious why - they won't want to potentially compromise their privacy and security.  If anyone found out who satoshi is, for example, he would be extremely subject to robbery and a whole host of other problems, and satoshi is someone capable of putting a lot of work into their anonymity while a lot of whales won't be.

most whales are the first one that mined bitcoin, i think theymos is a whale, he probably hold a very large amount like 10k, but maybe he sold everything early, but i don't know any whale in person, i think they only meet with other whales and make group to manipulate the price or work alone for the same reason

I do not think my country have some bitcoin whale, so it is impossible to meet them face to face.  Aside from that if they are really a bitcoin whale then, they wouldn't expose themselves telling every people they met that they hold a big numbers of bitcoins.  That would compromise his security.  So no, I do not met any whales face to face nor know one in person.

How much bitcoin to be considered "whale" ? I personally don't know any and I don't think any whale would expose themselves, telling people that they hold a lot of bitcoin. It put themselves at risk of being stalked and even robbed of their posession like a lot of things that happen on reddit.
