I know most setups for 2 or more GPUs were via riser. Just curious if anyone tried installing 2 GPUs onboard instead of risers. What motherboard do you recommend that can accomplish this?

Any motherboard with 2 full pcie x16 slots will work, and it works exactly the same like on risers. I used to have 2 1080s in my gaming rig, and they were mining when i wasn't at home or playing.

How's your airflow and temp?

How's your airflow and temp? A quick search would of turned up your answer...phillipma has 4 HUGE threads where he runs 2-4 cards directly attached to the MB for mining. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1877588.0

A few years ago, I found myself with a few spare MSI 7950 TFIII reference boards and a gigabyte MB. In the part of the world where I was, there could not be risers found anywhere in the country! I used the direct on-board approach and well? I guess the lesson learned. They get hot! And they get even hotter when the airflow is kinda restricted like when sitting very pretty on the MB. It's not a good idea! Not all MB are the same and most will starve the pcie slot of current! "More Heat" All summed up I'm glad the days of lots of heat are over.

motherboards with 2 pcie x 16 slots are designed to run 2 or more GPU's (why do you think they have them. its for gamers and heavy users to use 2 or more cars in crossfire or SLI, the only thing you really have to keep an eye on is the space between GPU's the minimum should be atleast 1 PCI slot. Gigabyte, MSI, ASUS are all leaders in gaming world so offer very good boards and can get them on a good deal most of the time.

id suggest at the price of raisers just adding all the cards to raisers and keeping them all nice and far apart just to keep them cool and cut costs that way.

I am not anti six card the way you say. depends on what the miner wants to do.

It's the best way and the most stable to install your cards onboard , i have all my setups as 2x onboard and a very cheap board can do it , you need a big place and cheap mobos and cpus ,rams , i have reached roi on most of them without problems or raiser headachs

My rigs are mostly 3-card rigs with no risers - it would be nice if MB makers would make 3 x 16x slot motherboards with the 16x slots at a 1-4-7 spacing instead of the 2-5-7 COMMON spacing as that limits cooling to the middle card, but it can be worked around using a "short" card in the #7 slot position like Gigabyte's "ITX" 1070 model.
There are motherboards that allow for 1-4-7 spacing on cards but ALL of them are 4+ 16x slot (most are 5+ 16x slot) and VERY VERY expen$ive and many of them are no longer being made.

yep.. all of the above is why I got interested in the galax katana 1070 1 slot card appears to be a perfect match for the biostar z170 Since I have like 8 bioster z170's I think I can finally build a 4 card case build with katana-katana-katana-katana or katana-katana-katana- 1080 ti Founders edition. I have finally exchanged messages with some galax usa people and they may send me a third and fourth card to showcase the build. Fingers crossed as it would be a nice machine. in this case https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147232this mobo https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138421

is the cooling for that katana gpu good? i see that with only one fan they are not good at cooling anyway so you are saving because of space but you lose because of 1 single fan, i also wanted to have a motherboard with 6 pcie x 16 slot and more space between gpu, so i don't need risers, maybe they will make those in the future

Would be nice, if it could run 8 x GTX 1070 Katana - but I doubt, the Chipset an Windowz will support it ^^ http://www.kfa2.com/kfa2/graphics-card/kfa2-geforcer-gtx-1070-katana.html Pannekopp

Katanas are nice, but what about noise? I bet that turbofan will be like F1 engine... and this MSI MARSHALL mobo is quite a thing, i must admit. How much are those katanas?

I'd think Katanas are LOUD, plus good luck even buying 6 of them right now. That board looks NICE, but i'm not certain if it has enough juice for the PCI lanes, it looks like it has a supplemental power connector for them, but only a single 4-pin.
I'm thinking about switching to Intel for my next rig build, since I've been doing everything with AMD so far, might give it a shot.

It's a 6 pin . Still doubt that will be enough.

It's a 6 pin Wink. Still doubt that will be enough. - well, manufacturer certainly tested this design before putting in to a mass production, so must be enough. Questions are: 1- how cool they will run 2- how loud they will be
