There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

I am curious on the perspective of people who condone the money being taken from the shopkeeper in the name of the first victim. Why shouldn't the victim be looking for the thief instead of the other victims he bought from? Why not repossess the thief's property in the first place as opposed to forcing other people to do the job?

The whole thing happened so fast, I don't see how anyone could have liquidated assets and transferred funds into Mt Gox to take advantage of the sell order. If several days had passed, I'd feel differently, but we're talking about a timeframe of less than an hour or so here. Hell, the sell itself was instant. Maybe I'm missing something, I don't see what the actual losses from rolling back the trades are, except for the market effects of this whole ordeal, of course.

The shop keep needs to make sure they're not stolen before he buys them.
Pawn shops usually check a database to see if items are stolen.
If nothing is reported stolen in 24-48 hours, they get to keep them.
PERHAPS we need a website that keeps track of reported stolen bitcoins.

Agreed. However, many individuals may not have the knowledge to use such tools. Should they still be held liable? |

There are posters everywhere in school about "Don't do drugs", but people still do them...
There are warnings to change your password, but people still don't do it...
It's your loss if you don't educate yourself when the information is out there.

Well, still, it's not the most moral method: to seize funds from people other than the original perpetrator. Adding more victims should never be the solution. |

I agree Atlas - I don't think it is the best method. The only pro to doing it that way is that a perp has less incentive to pay or trade for things with the stolen coinage.
US law doesn't agree with us though.
