Hi Everyone,

I would like to know what users think is the 'most secure' Bitcoin hardware wallet out there and what are the pros and cons of using ?

What experiences have you had with malware etc and are hardware wallets really more secure than using online wallets such as the latest blockchaininfo ?

Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks DD.

You're asking to compare two wallet types that are at completely oposite sides of the wallet security spectrum. There isn't a doubt in my mind that a hardware wallet is waaaaay more secure than an online wallet. Why would you ever trust an online entity with protecting your funds? If you're not 100% sure you're the only one in controll of your private keys, you'll never be sure you'll be the only one that can spend your unspent outputs...

A hardware wallet actually keeps the signing of transactions on a physical device that is built in such a way that it's impossible to extract your private keys when connected to any computer, even if the PC you're plugging your desktop wallet into is infected. On the other hand of the spectrum: if blockchain.info one day gets hacked, closes shop, decides to lock your account: say bye bye to your funds  Tongue

Ok thanks for that response mocacinno, so which hardware wallet do you recommend ?

I used to have a trezor, now i'm using a ledger HW.1 and a Ledger nano S. All three work as designed and AFAIK are decent, sturdy hardware wallets.

Yes.  Any malware, even a keylogger which can't be detected by most antivirus programs, could steal your Bitcoin and Blockchain is notorious for phishing attempts.  You also have to trust various aspects of Blockchain as a third party.  With a TREZOR you can use several different wallets, like Electrum, with it which are all better and sometimes even more convenient than Blockchain with its broken fees.

There are no cases that I know of involving a hardware wallet's funds being stolen.  Without the seed, it's impossible as far as we know.  Even in the case of a 5-dollar wrench attack you can use a decoy passphrase which you remember in addition to the seeds.

A TREZOR is extremely secure, and for current purposes a Ledger is too, although there are elements which are not "ultimate" security, like how they advise you to set it up from a trusted device while TREZOR says that it's safe to set up with a compromised computer.  In nearly all cases and for conventional purposes I would regard them as equal.

Case is the most secure but also the most expensive.

The larger you bitcoin holdings, the less important the price of a wallet is.

I've recently been looking into this, and I like the Ledger Nano S the best.  And it's priced reasonably.

The problem right now is the shipping.  The shipping for them is way too expensive.  If they can get them in stock at the local warehouses soon, I'd like to get one ASAP.

I've been using Bitcoin Core (password protected) for years, but it's starting to make me nervous.  So once I can get a Ledger Nano S, I'm thinking I'll switch to Electrum + the Nano S.

Bitcoin Core doesn't support it, but with the size of the blockchain and the time it takes to update it, it's probably just as well to switch to a light client.

Stay away from Case. The company has not upgraded the firmware for the Case wallet for a year and transactions are sent with very low fees. It appears they no longer support the wallet. It was an interesting project but was never the most secure hardware wallet.

There is not a comparison to be had, hardware wallets are the most secure if we compare them to web wallets since you are the only one that have the private keys and there is no risk of losing you coins to hacking or a virus or almost anything.

I would highly recommend the Trezor hardware wallet, its what I use and have used for many years "in-penetrable". Happy securing!
