I notice in some pools you can select the difficulty for a miner:
https://50btc.com/faq

So if you have a high hashrate worker, you can increase difficulty to reduce network traffic. How does this benefit you (the miner)? If you have higher difficulty, doesn't it take longer to return a share? Which in turn would lead to less rewards?  Huh

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

The ability to set the difficulty is usually a suggestion. The pool should figure out your hash rate and adjust your difficulty accordingly.

Pool share difficulty has zero impact on the amount of btc you earn. If you submit a diff 256 share you're paid basically the equilivant of submitting 256 single shares.

The benefit of using harder shares for higher hash rate miners is that it requires less frequent communication between the miner and the pool resulting in a  saving of bandwidth.

The pool controls you difficulty and your difficulty is determined by your hash rate. Increase your hash rate and your pool difficulty will probably rise.

I don't think it can, and but I'm also not sure the problem you are trying to solve???

The solution to latency = faster internet connection, no?

There's a pool where you can choose the difficulty yourself:
