Hey noob question here and I have a gut feeling that I know the answer. But back in early 2011 I bought bitcoin in a few accounts at Cavirtex.com (Kraken acquired them last year). I do not have access to the emails that I used as my computer's motherboard corrupted some years ago. I was wondering if you have any advice about how to possibly track these down. I would be more than happy to share the wealth if I can indeed recover them.

Needless to say I have contacted Kraken but without the email addresses and password it is hopeless. (which makes sense) Yes I know that it is my fault and I deserve this for not being more careful but hey it was like ~$100 back then...

Thanks for any help Smiley

you still got the private and public key of your wallet?

If not, try proving it through any verifications (ID, phone, IP, etc!)

There are other ways to prove this. Did you have to provide any credit card or ID back then? Did they have your name? Could you give them a list of possible emails that it would have been under? Explain the situation and I'm sure there's a way to prove who you are. Do you know the IP address that you used? If not, do you know of any website you use regularly that could give you IP logs?

I would just keep trying and trying because in the end it's your money so they need to give it back to you!

That is a good idea with the IP address. I will try that and update if I have any success.

Thank you for your comments.

Did you ever take any withdrawals (of any size) from Kraken/Cavirtex to a wallet that you still control?  If so, you might be able to show them the transaction from their address and sign a message with the address that you withdrew to, proving that you are the owner of the account.  They might have logs of which transactions they sent out.

Sure thing they will return them to you with a juicy and fat apology even paying you the interest for all these years Cheesy
Gone with the wind unless you could beg them by providing the username if not email for them to check if the coins are still in their old place or not.
I wonder how come you didn't use password manager which saves usernames and passwords in the cloud even in the case of system failure?

Thank you, everyone, for your help. I am taking two courses of action:
1. I am sending the laptop off to a programmer friend who will be trying to get any information off of it that he can. Don't worry we grew up together and he won't... lol
2. Currently, I am trying to trace down my account with a site called Havelock Investments (used for what they called "IPO's"). Hopefully, I can get in there and they'd have the address where they came from.

I will update with my progress.

EDIT:
One more route that I am also taking which is that I contacted Kraken support 3 days ago with as much information as I had on the accounts. I still have not heard back from them, but I do understand that they must have their hands full with the state of the markets and those DDoS attacks yesterday.

What do you mean by you don't have an access to email that you used? You mean you have a list of emails and password in a notepad or something else and you didn't save it and you don't memorized it now? Since emails are online, even motherboards or a computer become wrecked then you can still have access to those emails as long as you remember the passwords.

What Im missing here lol?

Good luck  Smiley Hope you get your 100btc. It's not a small amount and you shouldn't give up your hope and stop trying. Just keep on touch with them. Try to provide any kind of proofs or informations you have. Since it's your motherboard that's not working, your HDD should still be accessible. Check if you have anything saved over there. You might have saved your password/email address on your browser. Or you had autofill option turned on..

Same thing here haha

no access to emails because your motherboard corrupted?

perhaps you were using outlook?

Either way, access to your email is key. Spend hours at night trying to find all the emails you created during that time frame.
Also, as mentioned before. If you use credit card or pay pal to pay for the coins, find the receipt, find the account used. (Must trades done back then were cash or wire transfer).
Look for any contact from the old exchange.

100BTC are a lot of money.

According to this quote Cavirtex implemented an inactive account fee. If you do get anything back it will probably have had that fee deducted from it for each month of inactivity.

Warning: Today I noticed that CAVIRTEX has slyly implemented an inactive account fee.

Their TOS states that you will charged $50CAD per month if your account has not had any trades for a year.  This charge will be made in BTC until your account becomes empty.  I received no email notification about this, even though I have notification emails enabled (the default setting).

To add insult to injury, the inactivity fee listed in my account transactions is -4BTC.  It was made on October 30th, and from a quick check of historical charts it looks like the trading rate was about $210 that day.  At that rate they have charged me a fee of roughly $840 for my inactive account.  I have already opened a support ticket and I am crossing my fingers that it is a mistake.

*snip*

This user had to provide KYC documents when he registered with Cavirtex, including a color copy of his government issued ID. Did you have to provide the same KYC documents? If you did just send the Kraken the latest versions of those same documents.

*snip*

I registered with Cavirtex a while back, and as requested, I sent all the necessary documents to complete their verification requirements.

I signed their contract, the terms and conditions document. (That forces you into arbitration and releases them from everything, of course).
I sent them a color copy of my government issued ID, front and back.

I was then notified via my account (verification status, screenshot attached) that it has been verified.

This: , and then this:

You would think this mean your account have been fully verified. Apparently not.

Seriously speaking, how did you forget the email that you used on your account. Even though it is just a hundred dollars, it doesn't mean that you can forget that email. Maybe you should browse on your emails from your friend that you have contact back then.

If you're like me you may have 100± emails. So telling them it could be lollypop7484939@hotmail.com, or hambananajam12345@gmail.com, or monkey_face847383@live.com with a big list of emails isn't exactly going to help you out. What if someone hacked your email address and all they had to do was send a giant list of emails to recover the account? That's not secure at all.

I hope your diary is kept in a safe, or better yet a safety deposit box.
