It depend on what you want to mine, if it is bitcoins, a computer is useless for that, you would need an ASIC miner and those are really expensive and by the time you get them the ROI is almost impossible. If you wanna mine Dagger Hashimoto (Ethereum for exemple) you can get a cheap computer and put some AMD RX 480 in it and make a small profit if your electricity is cheap (But for how long ? And also, if you can find one). It's not as easy as it use to be to mine these day.

A computer can mine crypto currency however its only effective for lower difficulty on Bitcoin.    For security reasons Bitcoin has developed beyond being mined on a normal computer.    I can remember this being possible but it was many years ago.

I don't have much idea whats the exact price of each miner but you can actually check it here bitmain.com, this place has it all when you do have plans on mining bitcoin. Mining it with a computer is not possible on this days since you will need asic miners which you will definitely find on that site that I gave the only thing you can mine using pc computer is on altcoins and with the use of GPU's.

Mining is not a simple calculator programming it is something big and need lots of memory as well as electricity consumption. Computer mining is so slow these days that it will take 1 thousand years to mine a block and solve it completely on desktop CPU (the average one). Rigs are big, made for the desired purposed so they stand a chance to block identification.
