What you say kinda makes sense in a strange sort of way.

If robots do all the jobs, including manufacturing raw materials to make and repair robots, nobody needs people. The robots don't need the money they earn. So it can all go 100% for taxes. We the people can collect it all to buy everything that the robots make, including vacations to travel around the world, mansions, and anything else.

But the whole thing will have to be implemented slowly. And there haven't been enough robot varieties built so that they can do all the jobs, yet.

And that's kinda what this topic is about, sorta.

Universal basic income is exactly that, but it gives people all the choice, they can do whatever they want and if they want a decent life they can work in addition to it. Well, Silicon Valley has been hollering for a universal basic income for a while now. It's not just Marky Mark; Elon Musk (such a unique fucking name, I marvel every time) is all for UBI; Bill Gates proposed it as a 'robot tax'.

Don't trust this shit, folks.

It's very interesting that big high-tech companies in Silicon Valley are such gung ho supporters of universal basic income. They don't wish to be the greatest asshole when automation starts to seriously replace low level American workers, the optics will be bad and the public will need an albatross to hang everything on. What better way to head off the worst PR in the history of the world, than to try to correct the problem yourself? And once you start paying the government, it becomes much, much easier to lobby.

Do you want Google paying social welfare? Because Google is a company, with shareholders that must be prioritized. I'd rather a non partisan, tax payer funded source. Something that can't be lobbied. Something that can't be bought off. Something that cannot be subverted.

TLDR: tech companies would be happy to contribute some of their monolithic wealth to fund UBI; this will allow them to have much greater leverage on government decisions. You don't want companies with this much clout in modern government, but, this will happen eventually. The way both sides of the aisle are set up right now with the corporate sponsorship, we will eventually slide into a 'corporatocracy'. Notice how Zuckerburh went from 'I'm eyeing politics' to 'UBI!'. The Hawaii legislature recently passed a bill to explore the concept of implementing a universal basic income, or UBI, for its residents. The purpose, as its name implies, is to offer people who are seeking job retraining or who are only able to work part-time the opportunity to maintain a basic standard of living without going into poverty. But will it work? And more importantly, who will pay for it?

Known as House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 89, the bill tasks Hawaii with establishing a working group to focus on establishing basic economic security for the state's residents. This means addressing the growing income gap in Hawaii, as well as the ever-increasing costs of living throughout the state that are making it more difficult for average people to survive.

The text of the legislation establishes that its goal is to simply provide social security – or a working social safety net – to cover the basic needs of every Hawaiian resident. However, its backers say it accomplishes something much different, and in a way that many people probably wouldn't expect.

"Government is not collecting money and holding it in a trust at all," stated Representative Chris Lee, a Democrat, and the legislator who introduced HCR. 89. "Everything is on the table," he added, noting that the system could be funded in a variety of ways, including by expanding the earned income tax credit, for instance, or by monetizing public resources and offering new incentives for productivity.

While the generalized goals of UBI are to end poverty and homelessness, and offer hope to people who are stuck having to settle for part-time jobs that don't pay the bills – and from an ever-dwindling pool of part-time jobs, it's important to note – how UBI is implemented can vary in different contexts. Different experimental programs are being implemented all throughout the world, but they all seem to have one thing in common: They don't tend to work, and are more pipe dreams than they are workable solutions.

The advantage of ubi is that it's possible to reduce the state administrative foot print... foodstamp, ebt, etc -> all gone. No more fake jobs, no more humiliation for those in need, and better no remorse or guilt for the others...

In short a legit ssn, right to vote and an ubi...

One thing it's not important to look at such issue from a theoretical idealization of reality, but from what there is to what it would change.

A question does a death row inmate get an ubi? Ubi and children, it would be problematic to encourage exponential breeding... who hold the fund the kid or his parents?
