The US Library of Congress Just Put 25 Million Records Online, Free of Charge Knowledge is power, the old saying goes, but it isn't much use if it's hidden away – so we're excited to learn that the US Library of Congress is making 25 million of its records available for free, for anyone to access online.
The bibliographic data sets, like digital library cards, cover music, books, maps, manuscripts, and more, and their publication online marks the biggest release of digital records in the Library's history.
"The Library of Congress is our nation's monument to knowledge and we need to make sure the doors are open wide for everyone, not just physically but digitally too," says Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden.
"Unlocking the rich data in the Library's online catalogue is a great step forward. I'm excited to see how people will put this information to use."
Researchers and analysts will get most use out of the new records, but there's plenty of potential for them to be used in apps and databases as well. The Library hosted a Hack-to-Learn workshop looking at how the data could be used. Is this a method to flood people with so much free info that they will stop stealing copyrighted info? If so, won't it keep a lot of copyrighted info from being sold? |

Is this a method to flood people with so much free info that they will stop staling copyrighted info? If so, won't it keep a lot of copyrighted info from being sold? Ok, so you have free access to all the older books, but reading newer ones online can get you into trouble. I like what they're doing, I've used libraries back when I didn't have internet access, but I don't like that they're still chasing people over file sharing. At least now people will be able to print what they want at home instead of paying for copies. |

Well it's good to see that eventually stuff does reach the Public Domain unless a significant amount of money is donated ahem to politicians to extend the copyright rules Disney.
I kind of wonder when they will start releasing copyrights on computer code aside from the release of Windows 3.1 was it a while back by Mircrosoft.
Abandonware etc unless its covered by GNU.

Meanwhile, the Unpaywall plug-in is designed to get past scientific journal paywalls legally and easily, so inquiring minds can learn more about our world without having to stump up for a subscription.

Always got to remember the catch make sure to download the plug-in to avoid the paywalls ^^.

How can I access these records? I went to the MARC Distribution Services (data set) page and selected Books (English). But there is no list showing the books which are available online. Do I need to register first?

People now are lazy to read books. In fact, it's one of the ultimate source of knowledge.
