Hello,  I was in a hurry and used the minimum fee instead of the recommended.  My .25 btc transaction is still unconfirmed in memory pool.  Will this transaction eventually get processed?  It's been almost 4 days.  Thanks.

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

The best and free solution for this is to accelerate your transactions via this tool : https://www.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator/ but remember theirs a limitation on using that tool.
Hope that helps Grin

I agree that ViaBTC is a great tool, but i'd like to see the txid before recommending it...
ViaBTC doesn't accept transactions with less than 10 sat/byte, transactions with unconfirmed parents, transactions with dust outputs, unconfirmed transactions whose inputs have been double spent,...

@OP: can you post the transaction id?

You didn't mention the used wallet so you can either rebroadcast the transaction: http://neocashradio.com/blog/how-to-rebroadcast-a-transaction-on-blockchain-info/ , wait until the funds comes back to your wallet or simply submit them to a transaction accelerator like ViaBTC (but there are hourly limits so you need to be lucky to find a spot).

The ViaBTC accelerator is only available every hour between :00 and :01 - then the hourly limit is filled.

And -as already mentioned- when the fee is too low or there are other "problems" they don't accelerate it - and even when they accept it, it can take hours, because you have to wait until they find a block. But it is still faster then doing nothing.

I used the Bitcoin Core wallet.  So if I wait long enough it will eventually get back into the wallet?  If so, how long of wait (days, weeks, months)?  I'm not in any kind of hurry.  I was just worried that it might be lost forever.

No,

Bitcoin core will keep rebroadcasting your transaction... This way the nodes will not drop it from their mempool, so it will not return to your wallet without an intervention. (abantontransaction or zapwallettxes, to lazy to look up if the spelling of those comands is correct tough)
If you post the txid, i'll see if viabtc is an option for you.

Unfortunately, ViaBTC is no option: Transaction fee is too low

There is another accelerator: https://pushtx.btc.com/#/ only they have a payment system I can't do anything with.

Beware of other accelerators. Those are the only two I know they are genuine.

There are a few members on this board who could help you out. Look for other threads about "unconfirmed transaction"

BTW: the low fee seems the only problem here.

I was typing up about the same message Smiley
The thing i wanted to add: if you're not in a hurry, you can always try to open the debug console and issue the command abandontransaction "txid".
If this doesn't work, either read achow101's post here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1933569.msg19201753#msg19201753 or close your wallet, and re-start it with the -zapwallettxes , it'll rescan, so it'll take a while.

Both command should have the same net result: your wallet will no longer know about your stuck transaction, so it will stop rebroadcasting it, and it will allow you to re-use the unspent outputs to generate a new transaction (in this case, you're double spending the outputs)

The debug console looks like something I'd like to try.  I'm guessing I click Help>Debug Window.  The in the Information tab I would click the "Open" debug log file.  Is that correct?  I'm at a loss as what to do next.  Thanks for all your help so far.

After doing a little digging it looks like I would do this from the Console window and issue the command abandontransaction "aea1a2f098e20680fb6cd3f8454d5186a55c98a66796c123593b3379ae726253".  I hope it works.  I read something about it not working once in the mem pool.

In that case, read the post by achow101: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1933569.msg19201753#msg19201753
or restart your wallet with -zapwallettxes

The -zapwallettxes fix worked!  Thanks for all the advice.  The coins are now back, safe and sound.  I'm assuming that I don't have to re-send if I don't want to without messing anything up, right?  It was going to BTC-e for trading the dump.

You have to realise your old transaction will probably still exist in the mempool of several nodes.
It means there is still a chance this old transaction will be confirmed. If you want to avoid this at all costs (even if the odds are small), you have to re-use the unconfirmed outputs as input for a higher fee transaction.

I think you were lucky two times here. I wouldn't send any coins to BTC-e after reading so many complaints and scam accusation against them here. They are using selective payments, they are selecting users which they pay and they have closed so many accounts without giving proper explanation why they did it, they have been neglecting emails and support is being not nice. There are other places to trade.

Excuse my ignorance please.  What exactly does it mean to "Re-use the unconfirmed outputs as input"?  How does one go about doing this?  Is it simply to send the exact same amount to the exact same address with higher fee or something a bit less straightforward?

My experience in crypto was limited to setting up a GPU rig and ASIC butterfly rig a few years ago and scratching together a few coins.  I've heard the occasional reports of pools or trading sites going down.  BTC-e never crashed or stole my coins, albeit I usually didn't have any there or only traded for fun with a tiny amount.  What is the best place to do this now?  I haven't been active on any forums until I encountered the topic of this post, so I can just do research but I appreciate the heads up.

When you send a new transaction, using the old inputs, with a high(er) fee (you can send this even to another address of yourself), then this payment will be confirmed. At that time, when some pool wants to confirm your "old-low-fee" transaction this isn't going to happen, because the old inputs are already used. So it doesn't have to be the exact same amount and/or exact same address, it only needs the same inputs.

My personal experiences with Poloniex are good, I read good things about bittrex and bitstamp, but for all of them there are also people with negative experiences. Just be careful and look around on this board for recent posts about the different sites.
