People might remember a news item last year about an underage prostitute who had sex with dozens of police officers in Oakland. The girl was not paid for her encounters with police, instead they gave her secret information about upcoming "prostitution stings" so she would not get caught.

Today her lawyer managed to get the city to pay for the romantic interludes of its officers.

Oakland will pay $989,000, of which $973,000 will go to her lawyer, and she will receive $16,000, which works out to $20 per blowjob and $40 per normal sex act.

I couldn't find that part. Without it the story sounds less like an Aesop Fable and more like a stereotypical Hollywood movie with a happy ending. Good for her I guess. Couldn't find in the article whether these cops were fired, but this million should be paid by them, not the city.

1) First rule of police work Cops Do Not Pay for Sex on the Job.

2) A few of the cops were fired, one even self terminated, or did he? This scandal went far and high. No loose ends.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/08/us/oakland-sex-scandal-officers-fired/

Quote
(CNN)Four police officers in Oakland, California, have been fired for involvement in a department-wide sex scandal, Mayor Libby Schaaf said in a press conference Wednesday.
An additional seven officers were suspended without pay, and another is receiving counseling...

http://sfist.com/2016/07/26/oakland_officers_suicide_and_his_wi.php

Quote
Officer Brendan O'Brien, who committed suicide in September 2015 at the age of 30, has been cleared in the death of his wife a year earlier, who also committed suicide but whose death was briefly considered suspicious. According to ABC 7, an independent investigation has concluded that sought to confirm O'Brien's death was a suicide, and that his wife's had been as well.

The East Bay Express explains more thoroughly that the investigation was done by the Alameda County District Attorney's office, and it concluded that "both deaths were investigated professionally and thoroughly, ultimately reaching the reasonable and appropriate determination to classify each death a suicide."

As we learned earlier, O'Brien took his own life claiming that he was being blackmailed by then underage sex worker Celeste Guap, who says she was in some kind of romantic relationship with O'Brien for a number of months.

Loose ends, wrapped up. The higher level cops can keep jobs. For now...

I find this interesting for altogether different reason.

Corruption is again and again mentioned on this board as a reason why poor countries stay poor. Well, this is happening in United States, but unless you are retarded, you dont consider Americans to be enbloc poor folk.

Maybe corruption doesnt matter THAT much in creation of wealth and riches.

Unless, you want to tell me, that Westerners became rich, when they did not know what corruption was.

The difference might be how much detail the public receives.

In 3rd world corruption we usually get every last detail, down to the expensive shoes bought by some corrupt person. In the U.S. we get a very partial picture, but most people understand that heavy details are being left out.

In this case we know

a) The girl was a drug user having sex with dozens of police. It is fairly common for police officers to give drugs to prostitutes, but in this case that possibility was never even investigated.

b) There are so many suspicious details in the 'suicide' that sparked the publicity, yet no credible investigation has been done.

c) The vast majority of police officers involved, despite having sex with an underaged and vulnerable person, faced no discipline.

d) It is almost certain that the scandal was managed to deflect attention away from higher up police officers. The first evidence of this was in the suicide investigation which anybody can research.

e) When something like this happens in a 3rd world country there is usually some credible protest. In this case there was a little 'indignation', but honestly nobody wants to take on police corruption and open themselves up to attack from the Justice Department, whose main task is making sure that police corruption stays out of the news and uninvestigated.

Yet its people still have on average one of the highest living standarts on the planet.

Tells you alot.

I have no idea how to quantify the role of corruption in wealth of country, but there are obviously other factors in play. Youd have to try really hard to justify, that US is rich but corrupt, yet countries such as Nigeria or Uruguay are poor... and also corrupt.

People, who misuse public funds and  their office are found around the planet.

In consumer societies the primary goal is consumption.

To "quantify the role of corruption in wealth of country", maybe important to note that what constitutes wealth is subjective. A person's "belongings" are more "a part of them" amongst consumerists. So where "wealth" is money, people do dirty tricks to get money, and where "wealth" is something else then human ambition manifests differently.

Look at all the churches where "virtue" is "wealth". People will go through all kinds of contortions and corruptions to get their wealth.

I don't disagree with your views. I am just saying that the entire system is rotten. The victim has been awarded $1 million as compensation, and in the end she is going to get around 2% of that amount. This is just ridiculous and unjust.

She just got out of rehab. I honestly wish good for her, since she had a very rough start in life and got sabotaged and misdirected by a lot of people, but fresh out of rehab with a pocket full of cash... If the city wanted to help her they would have offered her the cash as college tuition, a vertical job in some agency, etc. The money is just so she won't say too much more to the media...

$16,000 may last for 6-7 months, given the high rents and other living costs. What she will do after that? Returning to the old profession? OK... leave that. But what about the payment to the lawyer, which was made at the expense of the tax payers?

You'll have to research those details if they are interesting.

All things considered, it's very unlikely she will last much longer.

She just got out of rehab and now has enough money for drugs. She is going to be of obvious interest both to journalists who know some pretty wild stories can be bought from her, as well as of interest to any number of police officers who know she is one interview away from destroying their careers. The money wasn't to help her live, it was to help her die.

This is ridiculous. Their dciks came out of their pants and so it follows that money should come out of their pockets as well. Also, don't anyone find it disturbing what they used to pay her? Sting tips. This is beyond acceptable. This is not just indecent behavior unbecoming of a public servant, it's corruption.

The share of the lawyer was also unbelievably large. Was he a private lawyer? At that price, he might as well have given the cops a blowjob to deserve that money.

Should she have gotten more?

This is a simple case of the failure of the society and she became a victim of it and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Despite the morality view might want to attach to it as it relates to the eventual payment she got, the fact still remains that the law will take its course as what is the rightful amount she is due for if the police officers had paid for her service? And for the lawyer, I believe the payment is just as a result of the failure of the police force and not really a payment largesse for him.

...

Such lawyers is an expensive prostitute. For what he brought her the dubious pleasure of winning in the trial he took the whole payment. It is not correct. I think she should file another lawsuit for a compensation of the services of a lawyer and to never use the services of such attorneys.

It reminds me of the guy who sent his daughter to work for John F Kennedy. He was sure Kennedy would protect his daughter from the predators of D.C. http://www.businessinsider.com/9-things-jfk-did-with-that-young-intern-that-will-make-you-sick-2012-2?op=1

How awful. Those money for me isn't enough at all for everything that happened to her. Tho as you have mentioned yes it is still not enough because being a prostitute under 18 is probably horriific experience of a girl

I just hope that she will use that money to earn herself some educational or technical degree/certification. But the fact is that most of the teenage girls who are forced in to prostitution never manages to lead a normal life after their rescue. The traffickers usually make them addicted to drugs and alcohol, which ruins their life forever.

When she was young she had "potential", the possibility or probability of a fair life. She got misdirected enough that now it is unlikely she will live much longer, she is a recovering addict who just got a windfall, and if she does make it to 21 her life is not likely to be much more than some version of a tragedy. Worse for the general public, there was only a token effort to hold those responsible to accountability, since they are police officers, and most of the people involved will remain anonymous and proceed with more caution. Interesting in today's news there was another "police suicide" that was strangely improperly investigated but sorted itself out on its own http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/chicago-police-department-couples-mysterious-deaths-under-investigation-the-watchdogs/
