Discussion on ALT Coins

I'd like to hear some discussions about ALT coins and why you like them - been reading some of the other forums but they are pretty confusing. My understand is Litecoin is basically second just on volume - but Peer2Peer Coin is coming up fast.
Thoughts?

I've been really interested in Ripple. It seems like something that could blow up and compliment Bitcoins in the future. ripple.com, I don't think it's just an alt coin though, I'm still trying to grasp it fully and it's XRP currency.
