There are some coin have a free  airdrop so better find one in announcement thread or you can try faucet.

Faucets will be a time waste, I'd recommend trying the altcoin market here on bitcointalk forum. There are some campaigns that are paying with altcoin for either social media share or your signature space.
You can earn good amount of alt from those, especially once you improve your rank.

nothing is free really. there is always a catch even if you don't see it right away.
in any case these are the methods i can think of:
- faucets
- airdrops, free giveaways, and payments for doing something small like just downloading the wallet or posting a comment on their ANN.
- there are some altcoins that give away coins based on how much bitcoin you are holding. which you need to sign a message.
- altcoin signature/twitter/facebook campaigns.
- bounties, such as designing a logo for them, designing an ANN thread, translating, ...

Join bounty campaign on ICO. But only few ICO are accepting newbie for their signature campaign. But you can join on social media campaign or do some translation if you have a good translation skill and never used google translate.

Bounties is probably the only realistic way to get altcoins though only works for the new ones, for old ones like ETH you can only buy them or mine them both of which costs money. Faucets give such small amounts its useless.

Bounties is the easiest to earn them for free. Translation, signature campaigns, twitter and facebook campaigns of a project will give you the opportunity. But I think you have to make your account as least a member to be able to join such bounties. Although some campaigns are accepting newbies, jr member in twitter and facebook campaigns.

you really needed to monitor the alt section in order to get some bounty rewards because aside from faucets claiming its only bounty will give you some free alt coins, and like what other's said you still newbie so it will be much harder for you to earn some free giveaway.

Go to Altcoins marketplace section and you will find a lot of bounties related to social media activities and tasks and signature campaign . there is

really a lot of bounties there . ( i assume by free = without pay for it ) but you will still do some work (easy work) .

Airdrop, social campaigns and signature campaigns as well as bounty's in the marketplace of Altcoin Section. Social media campaigns has some nice rewards if you have some good followers in Twitter and Facebook. You can always buy cheap altcoins and bag them.

There are some coin have a free  airdrop so better find one in announcement thread or you can try faucet.

It's hard to find a paying faucet, if any they pay at a cheap price. This is very tiring.
Better join bounty or signature.

Never waste your time with faucet garbage. If you have a facebook or twitter account, go on and join bounty campaigns of different ICOs. You can start earn couple of dollars equivalent tokens from each project.

is that MRAI still available? you can spend your time in there to kill time while you do signature campaign or wait for airdrop from a new coin, i don't know if there are some faucet that still give altcoin, maybe some satoshi from the altcoin like litoshi for example

Ya i know faucet is a waste.
And yes as you said for started and learning about some altcoins and in the process earning some of those would help.But later i am ready to spend some money in them as well.
